Carl Schaeffer Obituary

Carl J. Schaeffer Glenville Carl J. Schaeffer, 86, entered into eternal peace on Sunday at Ellis Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Carl was born in Colonie on April 23, 1928, a son of the late Joseph and Lena Safford Schaeffer. He was a 1947 graduate of Nott Terrace High School. He honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1950-1952. He was awarded the Army Occupation Japan Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean service Medal with a Bronze Star. Carl was employed by Price Chopper in 1961 as a supervisor and retired in 1985 after 24 years of service. Carl was an honorable man with superior ethics. He was committed to his family and friends, served his country and later in life volunteered his time for the benefit of others. Carl was diagnosed in 1990 with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gerhrig Disease. He attended and volunteered at St. Peters Hospital, ALS department, in Albany. He also volunteered with the MDA of Albany and was involved with research at the NYS Health Department in Albany. Carl worked on many functions for the Nott Terrace High School reunion committee. Carl was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marian N. Pintavalle Schaeffer, whom he married on January 6, 1955; his loving parents; and brothers, James, Robert, Joseph Jr., Harold and Albert, who was killed in WWII. He is survived by his loving daughters, Dorothy Dottie Pratico and her husband, Joseph of Scotia and Debra Knapik and her husband, Karl of Galway; granddaughters, Erica Pratico of Brooklyn, Keri Hladik and her husband, Daniel of Rotterdam Junction and Sara Knapik of Galway; a great-grandson, Daniel Hladik; sister-in-law, Patricia Berrian and her late husband, Robert Berrian; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Memory Gardens, Colonie. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Carl's memory to St. Peters Hospital, ALS Dept., Albany, NY and MDA of Albany, NY.
