Carl Shumway Obituary

Carl Martin Shumway, TSGT (USAF), son of Laura (Underhill/Shumway) McCarthy and Wellington Martin Shumway, both deceased, died on February 18th, 2021 at the age of 86 of complications from diabetes and Agent Orange. He was born in Cobleskill, New York on June 24, 1934 and moved to Schenectady at an early age. After graduation from Mount Pleasant High School, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at bases worldwide. He was an Air Force crew member on C97's with the 109th AGT NYANG, Schenectady County Aprt., C123, C124 and C141 logging more than 9,000 hours of flight time and completing over 687 combat missions in Vietnam. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Order of Palm for Gallantry and Air Force Commendation Medal. He was with the 374th Group Carrier Wing in Korea/Japan, 30th Military Airlift Squadron at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey and the 310th Air Commando Squadron at Phan Rang Air Base in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Shirley (James) Shumway, two sons Kevin Shumway (Sharon) of Syracuse, NY; Keith Shumway (Marcy) of Berwick, ME; two daughters, Keeran Shumway of Mechanicsville, NY and Kelly Leeds (Donald), Walnut Cove NC, a step daughter, Wendy Rose of Middlebury, VT; a step son, Roderick Rose of Lake Geneva, WI, special people Robert Gaboriault of Addison, VT; Cindy Rose of Chicago, IL and their families. Services will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in his memory to Homeward Bound (Addison County Humane Society), Elderly Services, Middlebury, VT or the American Cancer Society.
