Desmond Del Giacco Obituary

Dr. Desmond R. Del Giacco, MD., passed away peacefully on January 19, 2022 with his family by his side. Desmond was born on October 5, 1950, in Albany, NY, the son of Dr. Rudolph and Claudia Stafford Del Giacco. Desmond graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in 1968, and received his bachelor's degree from Union College in 1972, where he majored in music theory and chemistry. He graduated from Albany Medical College, class of 1976. He completed his residency at The Mariam Hospital, Brown University. Desmond continued his training, completing a pulmonary fellowship at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Del Giacco served the Saratoga community since 1981 as one of the first sub-specialists to join Saratoga Hospital. Spending time with Desmond was all it took to understand his passion. He served on the Saratoga Hospital Board of Directors for almost twenty years, and is one of a small group of Honorary Trustee's members. This honor was in recognition of not only his years of service on the Board, but his contribution to the organization's success. Dr. Del Giacco established a private practice in pulmonary and critical care in 1981, and was joined by cardiologist, Dr. Andrij Baran. Dr. Rodney Ying joined the pulmonary practice in 1989. Dear friend, Mary Barthalmas, managed the practice for over 35 years until her passing in 2019. Presently, the office is managed by Debbie Lloyd, who has also been with the practice for over 30 years. Desmond served as Medical Director and under his leadership oversaw the development of a modern Intensive Care Unit at Saratoga Hospital. Saratoga Hospital is proud that the ICU carries his name along with the wonderful Mary-Lou Whitney. Dr. Del Giacco served as Senior Medical Director for Clinical Services and Medical Staff Quality and Education from 2018-2022, Director of the Intensive Care Unit from 1986-2018, Saratoga County Chest Clinic Medical Director from 1984-2022, Medical Director of Pulmonary Function Laboratory from 1981-2022, Director of Respiratory Therapy from 1981-2022, and Hospice Medical Director from 1987-2010. Dr. Del Giacco also served on almost every medical staff committee, including the Credentials Committee, at Saratoga Hospital during his 41 year career. In addition, he served as the Medical Director of Saratoga County Public Health from 1981-2022, and as the Medical Director of the Tuberculosis Program, which he truly enjoyed. He received the Community Service Award in 2012 presented by Saratoga Hospital medical staff, the CDPHP Physicians Award in 2007, and the Patient's Choice Award for Compassionate Physician. His professional memberships included: American Thoracic Society, New York Trudeau Society, American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians Fellow, Medical Society of the State of New York, and County of Saratoga Medical Society. Dr. Del Giacco's commitment to his patients never wavered. He served thousands of patients over his career, made himself available at any time day or night, and continued to practice until the last days of his life. He always made time to share his knowledge and years of experience. And above all, he loved being a physician. Dr. Del Giacco often shared that his wife, Betsy Del Giacco, of 47 years made all of his accomplishments possible by being the best and most supportive partner he could have ever had. The passion he held for his work was also seen in his passion and dedication to his family. Along with his loving wife, he is survived by his children, Eamon Del Giacco (Meghan), Abby DeFeo (Kyle), and three grandchildren, Rhys, Matthew, and Maeve Del Giacco. Desmond is survived by his five siblings, Christine Hislop, Stephen Del Giacco, Dr. Eric Del Giacco, MD., Claudia Cowling, and Maria Del Giacco. Desmond was uncle to many wonderful nieces and nephews, and a dear friend and mentor to so many. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Saratoga City Center, 522 Broadway Entrance, Saratoga Springs, NY on Friday, January 28 at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saratoga Hospital Foundation, c/o Ann Carroll, 211 Church Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or www.saratogahospitalfoundation.org in honor of Dr. Desmond Del Giacco. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway (518-584-5373). Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com.

My husband was a long time patient of Dr. D's so I knew him from attending many of his appointments. He always treated me with kindness and compassion and answered any questions I had. He recommended physicians for me when I needed them. When I was in the hospital for any reason he always came and visited me and would say he checked my file to make sure I was being taken care of properly. I was never in as his patient but he took the time to always make sure I was ok and to quiet my fears. Sometimes it was as late as 9 pm when he would come in. His presence put me at such ease. He took such good care of my husband for 40+ years. He is missed as a doctor and as a friend. He was a one of a kind person that we were lucky to have in our lives.

I used to brag that I was patient 124 in Dr. D's 40+ year practice. Debbie Lloyd overheard me and said "Kevin, you are actually patient 24 as the accounts were numbered beginning at 101."

THE COMPLETE PHYSICIAN

I always copied Dr. D on tests results no matter who the ordering Dr. was.

On Friday, June 12, 2015 I had had an annual exam with my primary and had sent Dr. D the toxicology results.

My home phone rang about 5 PM and Dr. D's familiar voice was on the other end telling me that my Calcium was 13 and to go to the hospital. Being totally unfamiliar with what 13 meant, Dr. D said that anything over 9 could be an issue. Dr. D gave me a lesson on the Parathyroid then Dr Kutri's (SP?) contact info who introduced me to Dr. Tao. Dr. Tao performed the 1st of 2 alcohol ablasions at Saratoga Hospital destroying the rogue parathyroid.

All due to Dr. D laying his eyes on those test results.

It's been a year since his passing....I still send test results to him.....just in case.

I used to work around Dr del giacco. He is a very compassionate and loving Dr. I always would say to him to keep up the excellent work and he would always say you to Richard. Dr. Del giacco will missed by all staff at saratoga hospital. He was always bright and cheery. I worked around him for 10 years. I felt so comfortable working around a man after gods own heart. May god hold his entire family and friends in his arms and beyond the grieving process.

Desi was a talented and caring physician whom I had the pleasure of working with for many years under Bill Addison and Maureen Kelsey. His wit and humor were always a welcomed addition to the Board of Trustees and the numerous committees he chaired. Credentials Committee meetings were never the same without him. His white coat was always filled with cookies and candy....as he whirled around the hospital with the coattails following him. Desi and his compassion for medicine will never be forgotten.

Dr. Delgiacco was the man who saved my life 11 years ago. Where others saw a critical patient with little chance of survival, he saw a life worth fighting for. We spoke in February on the 10 year anniversary of my survival. He told me how proud he was of me, I told him nothing would have been possible without him.

I met him as a fairly lost 23 year old. Knowing him inspired me to use my gifts to help others. After he saved me I became a therapist and then an attorney and dedicated myself to helping as many people as I could. I am glad I got the chance to tell him that all of my accomplishments are also his.

Dr. Delgiacco was not just an incredible doctor, but an incredible human: kind, gentle, humble, strong, and generous. He dedicated his life to saving others and did so on a grand scale, despite his own health issues. All who knew him were truly blessed. And I will always be thankful that he didn't give up on me.

I pray he finds the peace and light that he gave to so many others. I will never forget the man who stood by me as I learned to walk, to eat, and to breathe again and consistently said "aren't you supposed to be sick, you're doing pretty good for a sick person." And the man who brought me chocolates for each new step I took. And my response is now, as it was then, "I had this really amazing doctor who brought me back."

RIP Dr. Delgiacco. I promise to continue to do good and make you proud. ♡

Dr. del Giacco was a wonderful doctor and will be very missed. My husband spent several days in the ICU in Saratoga and was intubated. The doctor could not have been more caring to him, myself, and other family members there.. he was supportive and kind in a difficult situation. Heaven has gained a wonderful, kind, n compassionate man.

It took me a while to adjust to the fact that your no longer physically here with us anymore. A strange feeling that I’m sure many people are experiencing right now.

Here is to you my friend.to those all-night poker games at Ole’ man Hanson’s house, partying on top of Crain Mt., contemplating crossing Lk. Champlain at midnight (lucky thing for us the boat was low on fuel), spontaneous late night road trips from Rowe MA. “To go find Al” in Delmar.

And of course, all the times we were able to visit with you and Bets over the years. Here’s to ya’ Buddy, we sure had grand times!

There are plenty of great doctors in Saratoga but Desmond was the best qualified, most dedicated and compassionate physician Saratoga was lucky enough to have. He had an ability to speak to patients gently but strongly enough to get them to make the right decisions regarding their health. No day was ever long enough for Desmond to do all the things he wanted to do for his patients and no time was ever a bad time to call him for professional care. His presence will be sorely missed professionally and personally. Our sympathy to his family.

Dr. D was the most compassionate and wonderful man. I met him when I started at Saratoga Hospital almost 15 years ago as a nurse aide. He always treated everyone as an equal and was always willing to talk and teach. He was one of those people who always remembered your name and always made a point to ask you how you are. He was wonderful to work with and brought so much joy and light into the world. He will be deeply missed.

Dr D is the real deal. I had the pleasure of working for him while at the Pulmonary Physicians Sleep Lab from 2008-2012. When I was diagnosed with a chronic bone marrow disorder in 2012 he showed up when it counted. I will always remember our conversation that day and how present he was with me. He has touched so many lives and is a prime example for us all to show up, be real, live with passion, and take care of one another.

Betsy and Steve,

I'm not sure if you remember me, but you might recognize my name.

Desi and I were friends from Elsmere Elementary School through graduation from Bethlehem in '68. We shared a ton of laughs through the years, and I can never remember having any type of argument/disagreement with him . . . . just fun. We maintained some contact through the 70's, and our relationship never waivered. He was destined to have the fabulous career that he had in Saratoga.

I last saw Desi in 79 or 80 (40+ years ago), but he was in my thoughts the past few years, as, have a few of my other old friends, and often thought about contacting him, but never did. Had I done so, I know that we would not have greeted each other with a mere hand shake, the greeting would have been with open arms from both of us.

I wish you and your families my sincere condolences over your loss. Desi will be sorely missed, both professionally and personally.

I can remember Desi and the Del Giacco family from the time they lived in a small apartment on Hampton St in Albany. I often played with Desi and when the family moved to Delmar it was not unusual for his Dad to pick me up and bring me out to their home for the day. At that time there were three kids. Desi, Christine, and baby Stephen. I have often thought about Desi and it just goes to show you that even way back then, he was making an impression on individuals. God Bless

He looked me square and put his finger on my forehead and said your sister is not going to die. He def had a part in saving her life and my spirit. Rest In Peace Dr Del Giacco. I met Dr. D in 1991 when I moved back to the area and started working at CHP on Veteran’s Way. We served on many hospital committees together over the years. He was a mentor, scholar and always a gentleman. He took care of my mother-in-law until her death and she took such personal joy in bringing him a small bag of m and m’s. He supported me during a personal crisis in my life. He was always a trusted person one could turn to for guidance either related to health or life. Thank you Des for everything you have done for so many in this community and without you, Saratoga Hospital would not have grown to the center of excellence it is today.

I remember Desi from next door on Greenleaf Drive, when we were young and without a care in the world. What a very fine man he grew up to be. My most sincere condolences to the family.

I had the pleasure and honor of working with Desmond my entire career at Saratoga Hospital. He was a friend, a mentor, a leader, and the strongest patient advocate I ever knew. It was a thrill working with him at the hospital in the 1980’s when we made efforts to bring excellent medical care to the community. Those efforts never ended.

I was deeply sorry to hear of his passing. He was truly one of the greats. My deepest sympathies to Betsy and his family.

I first met Dr.D in 1988 while caring for his family member as an ICU nurse in Albany. He asked me if I would consider working in his ICU at Saratoga Hospital and I did a few years later, never looking back. I was asked at my interview why I wanted to work at Saratoga and I said “Dr. DelGiacco convinced me I would be happy here”. I was told I couldn’t have a better reference! I loved my time at Saratoga hospital, and spent the remainder of my career there, retiring in 2014. Dr. D was was of the kindest, most compassionate physicians I have ever worked alongside. Ever respectful, he nurtured nurses and physicians with his expertise and wisdom and treated everyone with dignity.
In 2015 my mom became one of his patients and she adored him as did all his patients. He helped get her through some difficult times and for that I will always be grateful.
To the DelGiacco family, I hope your hearts are lightened knowing what a remarkable man your husband, father, grandfather, and brother was. He left a lasting impact on so many people and will be forever missed. My condolences to you all. Peggy Jenny

He was the kindest, most caring doctor my mother and I ever had. My mother referred to him as 'her other son' until her passing in 2009. He actually sent her flowers when she was in the hospital. Our family loved that man. He will be greatly missed by the community.

Business was the origin of my relationship with Desmond. In time we became friends and in more recent years, I became one of his patients. In each of those roles I liked, admired and respected him. Some people help make this world a better place. Desmond was one of those people.

He was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Caring, compassionate and a consummate professional. Years ago when my mother was still alive, he saved her life with a procedure that extended her life both in quality and duration. Thank you Dr. DelGiacco. May your family be comforted knowing how many peoples lives you touched. Rest In Peace sir.

“It is a privilege to be on the medical staff at Saratoga Hospital.”

Des was one of the first physicians I met when interviewing at Saratoga back in 2012. He immediately made this emergency medicine PGY-2 believe I could be a part of something great - a community hospital that punched far above its weight.

I am proud to say I have been his colleague ever since.

Our medical staff will honor Dr. DelGiacco’s dedication to his community, his hospital and most importantly, his patients. He has left a legacy of physicians who will follow in his footsteps.
