Eva Lewis Obituary

Eva May Bell Lewis, formerly of Albany, Nassau Lake, Brattleboro and Guilford, VT., passed away on February 13, 2022, at Ellis Hospital after a very long and challenging life. Matriarch of FIVE GENERATIONS: Marsha (Richard) Westfall, Schenectady, NY; Freda (Richard)Johnson, Williamsville,VT; and Fred Lewis, Glens Falls,NY. Grandchildren: Angela (Richard) Fuller, Brattleboro,VT; Brandy Lewis UT, and Fred T. Lewis, UT. Great-grandchildren: Amanda (John) Wierzbowski, Bondsville, MA; Mark (Melanie) Rochefort, Cuyahoga Falls, OH; Alex Chalue, Barre, VT; Julian Smith, UT; Patience Smith UT; Skyler Lewis, UT. SIX Great-great grandchildren: Jayce, Mark Jr.,Brooklyn, Gracelyn, Carson and London.

Mom was born in 1925, at home, in Guilford, VT, to Bertha Knight Bell Gates and John Bell. Eva never forgot her Vermont roots. A country girl at heart, she loved the simple pleasures of life: her garden, her family, travel, classic country music, Vermont maple syrup and creative oil painting. Above all else mom was an amazing survivor of a horrendous childhood of abuse, poverty, hunger, abandonment by her own mother, multiple abusive foster homes/farms, a life-long serious illness, a single mother during the 1950's, severe macular degeneration , then the last 15 years with chronic leukemia, finally pneumonia. She kept up a spotless apartment and lived alone with macular and cancer, no aides, until age 96. She was feisty and stubborn-did not tolerate child abuse, animal abuse or bullies well.

Absolute thanks go to ICU nurses and any of her doctors that truly honored mom's wishes to try valiantly to save her, not have Do Not Resuscitate automatically applied to her chart.

Mom, at 97, you deserve rest and peace now. Know that you were greatly loved.

If you knew Eva, please send us your kind memories/cards to: R. Westfall, P. O. Box 4223, Schenectady, NY 12304.

Funeral services will be private with a Spring burial in Our Lady of Angels cemetery.

Mom, while visiting your grave yesterday, I did feel your presence near us and a sense of peace and happiness seemed to be with you. This is the third year without you and it isn´t any easier to accept that I can´t pick up the phone and talk to you today or see you. I write this for myself, to ease the pain that will always be with me, but I have hope that I will see you again. someday. Love you always,
Marsha

Mom Lewis: We miss you every day. You know we spent a lot of time together paying bills, going to doctor appointments and helping you at your apartment. In Passing.......

Mom, you had to leave us
today,
With my questions for you
left unsaid,
afraid to hear the answers
I suppose.
The sad parts of your life left to
remain a secret.
I long to speak to you one
more time to ask for the
words you had trouble saying,
to hear the answers to those
promised questions.
To tell you that I love you one
more time.
In Passing.

,

Teresa and Lee
