John Berdy Obituary

John V. Berdy passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 10, 2023 at age 72.

He was born in Schenectady, son of Anastasia and John Berdy, and graduated from Niskayuna High School. He received an undergraduate degree in music and psychology from Union College and a Master of Arts degree in counseling psychology from Vermont College of Norwich University.

In the Capital District John worked in many capacities as a counselor: a dispute resolution mediator, a counselor for the Northeast Parent and Child Society, a bereavement counselor at Hospice, and therapist at St. Mary's Hospital. He was the executive director of the Haven Grief Counseling Center in Schenectady and developed a program to train counselors after 9/11 for New York City.

Later he and his wife, Claudia LeMarquand, had a private practice in Ashville, N.C. and the Twin Cities, MN.

Music was John's passion. He never met an instrument he couldn't play: piano, string and wind instruments, percussion. He studied Indian music, performed and recorded an album of his own ragas. He also lived in Ireland and fell in love with Irish culture and music. Throughout his career he used music in his counselling.

His beloved wife Claudia predeceased him. He is survived by his sister Michele and will be missed by everyone he helped and who felt the joy of his music.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate John's life on Sunday, Jan. 29 at noon at the Unity Church, 21 King Ave, Albany, NY.

John is missed, I cannot believe it's been a year. I still come across his emails every so often and miss our chats. Life got hard for you after your Claudia passed, but I am glad you are spending eternity together.

Oh, I am so sad and sorry for this loss. I have known John for numerous years from his time in Moose Lake. Where he and Claudia became good friends. I helped John pack and leave MN, but we remained forever soul friends. We would chat on the phone or he would send me emails. He loved sharing his music, stories and gave me even a reading one time based on my bday. We would chat for hours. He missed his dear Claudia so very much and although said I am joyful they are reunited. I sent him a card at Christmas and didn't hear back so my thoughs new something was amiss. My thoughs and prayers are with his family. Hugs to all.
Thank you Michele for letting me know. I will watch the service.

Dear Michele, Words cannot express the deep sympathy I felt for you reading of John's passing. Since your mother's death you have been in my thoughts and prayers. I will always remember how much joy and love your Mother felt for both of you. Your Mother was an inspiration for me, and she enriched my life beyond words. She still is to this day present in my life. Please know you will remain in my prayers and I am sure your Mother is embracing you with her love now. May God bless you with comfort. Love, Kathy
