Joyce Rose Obituary

Joyce E. Rose, of Amsterdam, NY passed away peacefully on Saturday February 12th, 2022 following a brief illness, in her beautiful home surrounded by friends and loved ones, alongside her golden retrievers whom she adored and a lifetime's worth of treasures and memories. Many thanks to The Community Hospice for the care they provided to Joyce and the guidance they provided to her caregivers.

Joyce was born on February 24th, 1946 in Brooklyn, NY (Bay Ridge) to the late Raymond and Florence (Addeo) Rose.

Joyce attended Our Lady of Angels Grammar School and Bay Ridge High School both in Brooklyn, NY. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY New Paltz and went on to teach elementary school. She worked for multiple agencies of New York state, including the Department of Labor before retiring from the Department of Civil Service in 2001. After her retirement from the state, she worked at Head to Tail Wellness Center in Schenectady where she enjoyed sharing her passion for dogs with customers and co-workers alike.

Joyce loved her dogs and met many of her friends via her love of dogs. She was an honorary member of the Schenectady Dog Training Club where she was an instructor for many years. She was also a founding member of the Schenectady Chapter 74 of Therapy Dogs International. Joyce loved all dogs but golden retrievers had the most special place in her heart and consequently her home. She loved sharing them with others, taking them on therapy dog visits to schools, hospitals, and nursing homes all over the capital district. Those who were on the receiving end of her more recent visits remember her goldens Willie and Ben fondly. In recent years Joyce was an active volunteer and vital part of the Fulton County Regional SPCA in Gloversville, NY. She lent her time, talents, and the wisdom of her vast experience to dogs who found themselves in need of her care and the people whom she worked alongside. She was incredibly generous with her time filling in anywhere she could and ready to help with anything that needed doing. Often, she would be called upon to transport sick dogs to vet appointments or to match dogs with their forever families as part of the adoption team, the latter being a job she was particularly well suited to and derived a great deal of satisfaction from. Her light shone brightest when she was helping and the impact she had on people and dogs alike will be felt for many, many years to come.

Joyce also enjoyed crafting, sewing, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and more recently basket weaving. She treasured the friends she shared these activities with. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, the beautiful pool she maintained primarily for her dog's enjoyment and the scenic property surrounding her home.

Joyce is survived by many cousins including Carol Lundrigan of Staten Island and Jean Endresen of North Carolina as well as many special friends including Laurie Rexford and her daughters Danielle Tyler and Jennie Rexford, Patty Reksc, Alexandra Jackson, Bettie Davis Wilkins, and Leatrice Miller Natola. She is also survived by her beloved golden retrievers Sam, Arthur, and Pete. Joyce was fiercely independent, loyal, and always driven by the courage of her convictions. She built a beautiful family for herself in the people she chose to surround herself with and share her life with. Her loss leaves a tremendous void.

Aside from her parents, Raymond and Florence, Joyce is preceded in passing by her dear friend Ann Kaczkowski with whom she shared her home and love of golden retrievers.

At Joyce's request there will be no formal service but a gathering of friends and loved ones to celebrate her life is planned for late spring. Additionally, memorial contributions can be made to the Fulton County Regional SPCA either via their website https://fcrspca.org/donate/ or by mail to PO Box 1274, Gloversville, NY 12078.
