Marcia Germain Obituary

Marcia Elizabeth (Hammond) Germain Schenectady Marcia Elizabeth (Hammond) Germain, 77, of Glenville, entered into eternal life on September 1, 2014 after a short illness at Ellis Hospital. Born in Schenectady, she was the daughter of the late Raymond W. and Elizabeth Hammond. Marcia was the beloved wife of Ray Germain for 55 years, whom she shared a lifetime of spirituality and love with family and friends. Their marriage was a role model for others to witness, one of such strength and endurance. Marcia is also survived by her loving children, Greg (Shelley) Germain of Cary, NC, Michelle Germain McDonald (John) of East Greenbush, Scott (Janice) Germain of Clifton Park; her precious seven grandchildren, Christopher, Daniel, Kevin, Shannon, Danielle Germain, Garrett and Melena McDonald. Also survived by her cousin, Marlene Jackson of Land O'Lakes, FL. Marcia attended Nott Terrace High School, SUNY Cobleskill and Oneonta. She worked for 30 years as a school lunch director at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Schalmont Schools. She lobbied for years on behalf of children for nutritious school lunches via membership with the NYS Food Service Association. She helped local nursing homes with their dietary menus. Marcia worked tirelessly for 10 years on the SUNY Cobleskill College Council and she and Ray funded the Marcia Hammond Germain Scholarship. Marcia lived courageously with Lupus for 40 years and was an extraordinary example of living with grace and dignity in the face of adversity. Marcia will be remembered as a pillar of strength and an inspiration for all the lives she touched over the years by volunteering with organizations that helped other people living with Lupus. For years, Marcia and Ray vacationed in Willsboro Bay and offered their summer home to family and friends. She loved to travel with Ray and spend time with Red Hat snowbird friends in Florida. Marcia and Ray were dedicated to community service efforts in church, prison ministry, Marriage Encounter, Rotary and P.T.A. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. For the last 50 years she played bridge with her Seven Sisters and enjoyed celebrating in their families' lives. Thank you Ginny, Mary, Louise, Pat H., Pat S., Josie and Donna for your enduring friendships. Marcia was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church for 52 years and lived her life faithfully with a Christian spirit. Calling hours will be Friday, September 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Immaculate Conception Glenville, 400 Saratoga Road at 10 a.m on Saturday, September 6. Burial will follow in the Most Holy Redeemer, 2501 Troy-Schenectady Road, Schenectady. Contributions may be made in her honor to the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., 2000 L Street N.W., Suite 410 , Washington, D.C. 20036. I have shared some many fond memories with Mom over the years. I remember the first time I met Marcia at her 60th birthday celebration and I was taking her picture with a 35mm Canon AE1 and she made me laugh, when she thought I was the hired photographer. You raised an amazing family Mom, and I enjoyed our many conversations over the years. I will always take care of your daughter as she loved you so very, very much. Rest in peace Mom, until we meet again!!!

Memories are a wonderful and precious gift that makes us who we are. I'm sorry I am not there to share in the family memories and celebration of Marcia's life. I'm proud to have her as a part of me and my family. I have fond memories of her smile, laughter and positive outlook on life. I also have fond memories of her visits to Tampa over the years. She was usually here in the spring when the orange trees blossomed and that fragrant smell will always remind me of her spirit. She always made me feel welcome in her home and had a genuine interest in the lives others. I hope you find comfort and joy from all of your happy memories.

Although Marcia was my second cousin, I considered her to be my wise Aunt from the North. She and Ray always treated me as one of her own and I love them both with all my heart. I wish I could be with the family to say my final goodbye this weekend. You will be missed by many but I will see you again. Say hello to my Grandpa Stanley. RIP
