Marion Capasso Obituary

Marion M. Capasso Ballston Spa - Marion M. Capasso, 99 years of age, passed away peacefully in her home in Ballston Spa on January 8, 2024.
She was born November 23, 1924, in Springfield, Massachusetts to Edwin C. Millard and Maude Duxbury.
Marion is survived by her son Edward M. Morley (Barbara), step-daughter Frances Dobroski (Bill), daughter-in-law Suzanne Capasso, grandchildren Christine Madsen (Michael), Edward J. Morley (Megan), Jessica Engels (Jason), Charles Capasso (Christine), Alexandra Capasso (Brian Hauprich), Meghan Dobroski-Lewis (Scott), James A. Capasso, Nicole Capasso, Cynthia Smith, Michael Capasso, Jerry Minett (Amy) and Chris Minett. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband James A. Capasso and eldest son James L. Capasso, both former Mayors of Ballston Spa, as well as her son Michael C. Capasso, brother John Millard, brother Edwin C. Millard Jr., sister Laura Jane Benscoter and sister Ruth Anne Kelley.
Marion graduated from Ballston Spa High School in 1942, and Syracuse University as a member of the class of 1946 (an impressive achievement for a woman at this time). After graduation she was employed by General Electric as a Librarian. She was later hired by Galway Central Schools where she taught 3rd and 4th grades, ultimately becoming the School's Reading Specialist after obtaining her Masters degree. She retired after 27 years of service.
Following her parents example, she was very active in the Henry Cornell American Legion Post #234 Auxiliary. She became a member in 1935 and remained active for the last 89 years. In 1980 she was elected state-wide President of the Department of New York American Legion Auxiliary - following in her mothers footsteps who served as President in 1948. They are the only Mother/Daughter to ever hold the position.
As part of her work with the American Legion Auxiliary, she served as the President of Girls State for many years, and her legacy lives on through the annual Marion Capasso Award, which is granted to the Unit Leadership Chairman who exhibits the most outstanding accomplishments in leadership each year. Marion was also a lifelong member of the Ballston Spa United Methodist Church where she was part of the Food Pantry Ministries volunteering until she was in her mid-nineties.
Friends and family are invited to calling hours at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 E. High Street, Ballston Spa, on Wednesday, January 24th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.. Funeral services will be held 10am Thursday, January 25th at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Ballston Spa Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Marion's memory to the American Legion Auxiliary, 23 Pleasant Street, Ballston Spa, NY 12020 or the Methodist Church Food Pantry Ministries, 101 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa, NY 12020. I loved working with Marion at Galway. She had a great sense of humor and was not afraid to "tell it like it is". She was inspirational. My condolences to her family.

Mrs. Capasso was a huge impact on my life. Her name is long remembered as being one of my very best teachers in grade school. I remember her as being such a nice lady. By the time I got to her grade, even though I was probably 9, I was so done with school. She made it interesting. She was just so very nice. My most sincere condolences to the entire family.

My heart goes out to the Capasso family during this time of loss. Her son was a good man and helped out everyone he could. That kindness will always be remembered.
