Mary Lommel Obituary

Mary Ann Lommel (Ryan), age 83, of Niskayuna, passed away on September 1, 2016 at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, after a short illness. She was born on March 20, 1933 in Indianapolis, Indiana as a premature baby, weighing 2 pounds, 14 ounces. Mary Ann moved from Indianapolis after 10th grade and graduated from high school in Keene Valley, New York. She graduated with a BS in Chemistry from The College of Saint Rose in 1955. She worked at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory until 1961. She married, James Lommel, in 1959 and raised a family in Niskayuna. Survivors include her husband, Jim; her daughters, Joan Mintz of Harvard, MA and Patricia Bruttomesso of Concord, MA; their husbands, Michael Mintz and Raymond Bruttomesso; and her cherished grandchildren, Thomas Bruttomesso, Elizabeth Bruttomesso, Alan Mintz and Brian Mintz. She is also survived by her brother, Jim Ryan of Marshall, IL; and her sister, Martha Wooldrik of Sacramento, CA. Mary Ann was active with Saint Helen's Church and School. She volunteered as a first grade science class teacher in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In later years she was active as a Eucharistic Minister and lector. Mary Ann also supported the arts in various capacities, including as subscription manager for the Schenectady Civic Players for 20 years. She was the first manager at Proctors when it reopened in 1979. In addition, she was the Head of Volunteer Ushers at Proctors from 1980 until 2004. Mary Ann enjoyed traveling with Jim through the United States and Europe. Her favorite trip was to Germany in 2008 with her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Maureen. In addition to her children, one of Mary Ann's legacies will be the more than five dozen Christmas stockings that she knitted for her children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends' children. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 9 a.m. at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church, 1803 Union Street. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Gleason Funeral Home. Burial will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to The Mary Ann Lommel Scholarship, for a graduating senior, at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School, 2600 Albany St., Schenectady, NY 12304.

Dear Jim:
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mary Ann's passing. She had a dedication that knew no bounds where Proctor's was concerned and I'm sure in the church as well. I enjoyed knowing her and working with both of you at Proctor's. She was a wonderful lady who loved her family and took great delight in her grandchildren. I will always remember her with fondness. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I know you have many loving memories to sustain you.

So sorry to learn of this. Mary Ann did so much for our community. I wonder if we could have made Proctor's a going concern without her. Those were exciting times.

Dear Jim - it is with great sadness I read in this mornings obits in the Daily Gazette about Mary Ann passing. I have such fond memories of the 28 years that Dick and I volunteered as ushers at Proctor's. Mary Ann was so vital in bringing Proctor's back to life. Be comforted by your cherished memories as you celebrate a life well lived. Nancy Lang from Coppell, Texas
