Maurice brought enormous goodwill as he arranged for receptions in towns along the route of the Albany Tricentennial Canoe Trip between LaChine, Quebec and Albany in 1986. It is a tribute to his skills and his good humor that the voyageurs were well taken care of along the route. You are held highly in our memories.

Maurice was one of a kind: warm, welcoming, and a complete gentleman. We spent several occasions with him in the course of the many years that we knew him through La Federation Franco-Americaine du New York. He loved and never forgot his Franco ancestry.

I (Ora) interviewed Maurice for our building's August 2017 newsletter for residents here at Beltrone. Some things that stood out for me in our chat that I included in that article: "Maurice enjoyed the benefits of being the youngest of four children growing up nine miles from the Canadian border. Yes, he was spoilyed, BUT he also learned to endure teasing and disagreements with three older siblings, developing traits that served him well in many situations in life. French was spoken at home. If he didn't ask in French for the bread at the dinner table, it wasn't passed"...."It always has been a special treat when a former student recognized him and introduces him to their children"....as a textbook salesman, he "became especially fond of home cooked meals because he was only home on weekends."...AND "in 1983 Maurice coordinated war canoes, each carrying 17 paddlers, along the waterways from Montreal to Albany. They retraced early trips by explorers for three weeks to publicize French Canadians settling in Albany. Native American Abenakis (from the reservation outside Montreal) dressed in traditional clothing accompanied them. Maurice and other paddlers dressed as trappers. They stopped along the shore numerous times for riverside celebrations".
Boy, do I wish I had seen that!!!
I ended the article with..."If you get a chance to use the fitness room at Beltrone and Maurice is there, say hi and chat with him. With a smile and a twinkle in his eye, I'm sure he will share a few words to make your day brighter like he did mine."
Maurice was a gem, no doubt about it. Our sincere condolences.
