Michael Wallender Obituary

Michael Todd Wallender NiskayunaMichael Todd Wallender, born April 8, 1950 to Kenneth and Martha Wallender, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013. He was a lifelong resident of Niskayuna, NY. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Martha Wallender; his brother, David Wallender; and his wife of 25 years, Joyce Wallender. He is survived by his daughter, Kristina Lee Wallender and her wife, Joanna of Seattle, WA; his son, Michael David Wallender and his wife, Heather of Niskayuna, NY; his brother, Steve Wallender and his wife, Candice and their children, Alex (Elena) and Katherine of Houston, TX; and his longtime teammate and friend, Regina Sportman of East Greenbush, NY. Mike graduated from Colgate University (summa cum laude) in 1972 and then Harvard Law School (magna cum laude) in 1975. He was an accomplished attorney in Albany for more than 35 years, specializing in litigation, labor and employment law, and most recently a partner with Couch White, LLP. Mike was also distinguished general counsel to various realtor organizations, including the New York State Association of Realtors. Mike had a passion for the law, horse racing at Saratoga, and reading. He loved Ireland and through his annual trips there he discovered that Ireland was the beauty of its people. Mike took a special interest in the plight of the nationalist people of the North of Ireland, particularly the Irish political prisoners and their families. He was an active member of the Irish Northern Aid Committee, honored by the prestigious James Heaney Award. He has touched scores of people in Ireland with his generosity and significant contributions of time and professional expertise. Mike was the most loyal friend you could ever ask for. He charmed us all with his keen wit, sharp mind, and profound dedication. He was a caring and giving man who always put others' happiness before his own. Mike will forever be loved and missed, but never forgotten by those that were lucky enough to know him. Nary a day goes by that I do not think of Mike and it always includes a smile and wonderment at his wisdom and kindness, and which dominated; hard to tell. A truly great man and that was evident since our first meetingsimply a wonderful guy and a cherished friend.

Dear Family of Mike Wallender,

I am so sorry for your loss, which we share in. I came to the wake, but the line was so long that I could not stay. I am sorry we did not have the chance to meet.

I clerked with Mike about 36 years ago in the Appellate Division, he was responsible for my move back to Albany from NYC, and enjoyed when we had a chance to catch up every now and then. He was a fine lawyer and an even finer person. He will be missed.

Best wishes to all of you.

Mike was a funny guy... in 10th grade he offered me a bet. I could chose any team to win the World Series game that day. He didn't care which one I chose, so I picked one and made the bet. Clever Mike then told me there was no game that day, the teams were traveling to another city. I had "lost" the bet but he didn't want to collect. (I'm still not a sports guy!) At our last reunion he took the time to speak with me one on one. We were not close but I appreciated his interest in what I had done these last 40 years.

Michael:
Our 25-year friendship ended with a phone call on Friday - you have left us with a huge void. Your sage counsel, both on personal and professional matters were offered with caring and competence. More than that you were known for your humore and friendly banter. You were a joy to be around. It's with a heavy heart that we honor your memory.

Kristina and Mike:
Please accept our deepest condolences. Your father loved you unconditionally. Several years ago, when you were teenagers he planned a family vacation in Scottsdale, AZ. Your Dad had to stay behind to complete important negotiations for his client but true to form he insisted you go ahead and enjoy yourselves. We benefited from that when we got to see you both, but of course we all missed Michael. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this most difficult time.

Dear Kristina and Mike,
When we assumed leadership of Niskayuna's Pop Warner football program in 1990 your Dad handled every legal aspect, he walked us through what we needed to do to make the program successful. Without your Dad's expertise and sincere generosity we would have had a very difficult time. He was always there for us whenever we had legal questions about the incorporation process. Just a few weeks ago Ed saw him at The City Squire and they reminisced for quite some time and shared many laughs.
God bless you during this very sad times; be assured of our prayers for your family.

My dearest, greatest friend,

You recited this Irish Prayer to console me when my mother passed from the Grant family unexpectedly when I was just 12. I always remembered and would recite to you when times were unkind to lift your spirits.

May the road rise to meet you,
may the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

We all looked up to you and admired your broad Irish grin.

Your spirit found it's path to Ireland over the years.

Now when we look up, we see you in God's path, walking that road in Ireland forever.

God's speed my friend. I can only hope that my road will rise to meet with yours one day. The honor will be mine.

Deepest sympathy to the Wallender family.

I posted this earlier but my name didn't appear and I do want the family to know who it's coming from (they will know the background):To Mike's family: my prayers and thoughts are with you constantly now and will be going forward since I know all of you and like Mike you are family. To Mike: you will be missed so much. Mike was one of the best friends I ever had both in college and out and was a brother to me. He even taught me how to drive a standard shift. There are tons of stories but his voice, his wit, his intelligence, his infectious friendliness, wisdom, his incredible humanity and most of all his wonderful, giving spirit will be missed so much. I will be burning this big candle each night until its through but my thoughts about Mike will never be through.

Kristina and Michael,
So sorry for the loss of your father and my good friend. I will hold many memories of your father and I together, especially enjoying opening day at the Reading Room in Saratoga and betting each other on what winning ticket we held in our pockets (it was always 1-4 exacta box). He's now at the starting gates of heaven where every bet is a winner with God. Rest in peace Mike.

As an NHS and earlier years classmate of Mikes, it became our "little tradition" at the Reunions for him to buy me a drink at the bar and we would stand there and talk, just the two of us, for a short while before going off to spend time with others. I will sorely miss that this September but will toast to him for sure !! Charlotte (Toddy Heaps) Phillips

For nearly 40 years Mike has been an integral and important part of the Greater Capital Association of REALTORS, the Commercial & Industrial Real Estate Brokers and our Capital Region Multiple Listing Service. Everyone of our 2,600 members knows we have lost a strong advocate for REALTORS and the property owners we serve; and we all know too that we have lost a very good friend. To say he will be missed is an understatement. He touched each and everyone of us is so many positive ways.

The Essence of Today

I expect to pass through this world but once
Any good I can do, or any kindness that I can show
let me do now, for I shall not pass this way again.

A great good man has gone. Kind, generous, wonderful. He will be truly missed but not forgotten. Slainte and Godspeed my friend.

Mike helped me in so many ways over the years in his professsional capacity. He could, with his intelligence and common sense, quickly cut a clear path through very complicated problems. His sense of humour, wit and charm were a bonus that made working through unhappy situations tolerable, even funny. They became part of a book of lessons learned. Working with Mike was a privilege and a learning experience that I will cherish my entire life. Knowing that he was a phone call away always made me feel more secure. I know that I will continue to reach for the phone to call Mike, but then will have to think through what he would have advised. In that sense, he will be with me always. What is irreplaceable is the process of working with Mike... the unexpected analogies were my favorites. To all of his family, you are in our hearts and prayers.
