Paul Strausman Obituary

We announce with unbearable sorrow that Paul Alexander Strausman of Albany, NY passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in the early morning hours of December 21, 2008. Paul was born to Albert and Rosalie (Stern) Strausman on January 13, 1954 in Queens, NY, raised in Hauppauge, NY, and later moved to Albany where he had resided since. Paul currently taught K-5th grade general music and 5th grade chorus in the Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School in the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District. Prior to this, most work occurred in Albany. He taught elementary level general music, chorus, and beginner band for 11 years at the Albany Academy for Girls, and also middle school band at the adjacent Albany Academy for Boys for two years, and one year of music and chorus at Livingston Middle School. He was a favorite summer camp instructor at Helderberg Workshop in Voorheesville, NY from 1985 until the present, where he implemented the Discoverland Land of Music Program. In the course of his career, Paul was active on the folk scene as "Stock 'n Strausman" with duo partner Dick Stock, involved in Ruth Pelham's Music Mobile program, a house program, a house parent for troubled youth at Parson's, head teacher and activity director at Pierce Hall Daycare Center, an arts-in-education specialist through BOCES, a songwriting and instrument making summer workshop leader at RCCA Performing Arts Camp, an arts-in-education specialist at St. Catherine's Center for Children R & E May School, an adjunct professor at Maria College where he taught Early Childhood Music and Theory in the Classroom, and an arts-in-education specialist, performer, workshop provider, performing concerts and providing music and arts-in-education programs for families and children, schools, libraries, museums and other institutions throughout the northeast. Paul was an accomplished musician, especially on guitar, piano, mandolin and banjo, and a prolific songwriter and inspirational performer. He leaves behind a vast body of work that touched many lives: award winning children's recordings with A Gentle Wind; numerous songs, teacher guides and educational materials published through Scholastic, MacMillan/McGraw-Hill and Harper-Collins; and especially his music. He was an active member of the Children's Music Network and the Picking and Singing Music Association, of which he was just recently voted president. Paul was actively involved with scouting while growing up, and also with his sons, serving leadership positions in Twin Rivers Council Cub Scout Pack 211, and BS Troop 46. He was a devoted husband and father, and dearly loved and took pride in his wife and children and all of their accomplishments. He played guitar at St. John's-St. Ann's choir for ten years, in support of Carol's Christian faith, and was an active supportive member of their community. Paul loved simple things, like finding an arrowhead or fossil, spying a rainbow after a storm, and jamming with his friends. He was a peacekeeper, always gentle, kind and forgiving, and always concerned for the welfare of children. He was apt to spontaneously sing out a silly song, quote a Seinfeld episode, or drop a funny line that made you laugh out loud. He often conducted his children's choirs with a silly figurine poking out of his pocket to make his singers smile. Paul's greatest strength as a music teacher was helping kids form a lifelong love and appreciation of music, and confidence in their own creative abilities as singers and musicians, whether professional pursuits or for their own personal recreation and pleasure. Paul was predeceased by his mother, Rosalie (Stern) Strausman, and his close songwriting partner, Phil Zwickler. He is survived by his wife, soul mate, and creative collaborator for 26 years, Carol Coogan; his beloved daughter, Raina Strausman; his treasured sons, Shea Strausman and Arlen Strausman; his sister, Jill (Donald) Person, all of Albany, and his father, Albert (Jeanne) Strausman of Greenville, NY. A private graveside service honoring his Jewish faith was held at Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont, NY. A memorial service in celebration of Paul's life and work will he held on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 1 p.m. at St. John's-St. Ann's Church, 88 Fourth Ave., Albany, NY. All are welcome. Dear Strausman Family- I am so sorry to hear of Paul's untimely passing. He dated my younger sister in high school and he and his guitar were a constant presence in our household. We sang many songs together and he played at my wedding. We were never in touch over the years that we have lived in the Albany area but I was just thinking that I should buy some of his music for our young grandchildren. We are so sorry to have heard this sad news. He was a such a kind gentle, talented soul. In sympathy, Polly (Penny) Stahl

After singing the song, "Candles Shine," with my choir again this year, that Paul so kindly shared with me, I came home and found this sad news about Paul passing. I am so sorry for your loss, for the loss of the music and the loss to us all, but am grateful for knowing him in the brief time I did. My heart goes out to you Carol, and your children. I didn't know Paul long, but I feel I knew him well... He was a dear, sweet man with a very generous, giving and loving heart, and much talent! His songs will always be a gift to this world, and I'm grateful for that! He walked in peace and everyone who met him could see that! Every time we chatted he shared pride of his family ... you were all so loved by him! I hope you find time to relax and give yourself healing time ... my best warm wishes are with you during this cold time...
Love,

Dear Strausman Family
We are so sorry to learn of Mr. Strausman's death. We had contact with him for the past twenty years - he entertained at two of our boys' birthday parties and today we looked at photos of him playing guitar in our living room in 1988. We sang two of his wonderful songs - the dinosaur song and on top of spaghetti. I used to sing a lullabye from his cd to our youngest .
Later on, when he was at AAG, he taught both Ben and Hugh to play the guitar. He had a wonderful gift with children.
Our sympathy and condolences to the entire family on your tragic loss.

To the family of Mr. Strausman,
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Paul always had a smile and kind word when I picked up my fourth grade students from music class. Just recently I learned of the fun things he did with the children during music class. The children really liked him. My fondest memory of Paul is sitting in our learning pods this spring during habitat day singing songs with the children. He even wrote a song that day about the peacefulness of nature. May your family find peace in your memories.

Dear Carol & family,

I had the honor of teaching music with Paul at Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School for the past year and a half. I taught Band and
Instrumental Music while Paul taught Chorus and General Music. I knew Paul as a gifted and extremely thoughtful teacher, musician, and human being. Paul was an inspiration to all of his students and to all of his colleagues as well. He was always positive and always had something complimentary to say about everyone. He always created an atmosphere in which students loved learning music. I will miss him greatly as I'm sure all of his students will as well.

Dear Strausman Family,

I am saddened to read of Paul's passing. I first met Paul, at Grafton State Park, when my children were very little. We had gone to the park to hear one of Paul's concerts and to hike and swim. That day he sang a song about the colors of people's skin, that spoke volumes to our family made by international adoption.

I last saw Paul, about two years ago, when he and his daughter sang for our Story Circle's Children at the Well program. He had written the song.

God bless you all. I am praying for you, as I type.

Grace and peace,

Colette
