Robert Nugent Obituary

Father Robert A. Nugent, 70, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at his residence in Queensbury. Born on December 7, 1938 in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late George and Mary (McCarthy) Nugent. In 1956, Father graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy. He then went on to attend Niagara University for his undergraduate work and finished his studies at St. Bernard's in Rochester. Father Nugent was ordained May 29, 1965 by Bishop William A. Scully at the Cathedral in Albany, NY. His pastoral assignments included St. Michael's Church in South Glens Falls, NY, Immaculate Conception, Schenectady, NY, St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, NY, Notre Dame Church, Whitehall, NY, St. Peter's Church, Stillwater, NY, and Our Lady of Grace in Ballston Lake, NY. He was pastor of St. Joseph's Church Scotia, NY, from 1977 to 1981 and then become pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls from 1986 till his retirement on December 31, 2008. Father Nugent was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary (McCarthy) Nugent, a brother, George L. Nugent Jr., and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Nugent. Survivors include a brother, William (Ace) Nugent and his wife, Betty of Wynantskill, NY, and North Park, Florida; three nieces, Kathy Foxen of Troy, NY, Michelle Nugent-Jameson and her husband, Bill of Clifton Park, NY, Nancy Lansing and her husband, Joseph of Latham, NY; three nephews, Kenneth Nugent of Wynantskill, George M. Nugent and his wife, Christine of St. Charles, MO, Gary J. Nugent and his wife, Teresa of Latham, NY and several great-nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2009, at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Saratoga Avenue, South Glens Falls, NY. The Most Reverend Howard J. Hubbard will be the principal celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in South Glens Falls, NY. Friends and parishioners are invited from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at St. Michael's the Archangel Church to offer their respects. A parish Mass will then be celebrated at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening. He will be sorely missed by his parishioners and loved ones. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Father Nugent. He was an inspiration to the parishioners of Immaculate Conception Parish in Schenectady and a true treasure as a teacher at Notre Dame High School. I am grateful to have known him.

Father Nugent Family
I was saddened by reading of your recent loss of Father. He was a good friend to Father Leroux and the Leroux Family. Father Leroux spoke highly of him. Now, Father Leroux and Father Nugent will be together with Jesus. God bless each of you.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Fr. Bob Nugent. We were not only the same age, but ordained in the same year, 1965, he for the Albany Diocese and me for Maryknoll. Although we hadn't seen one another in many years, friends told me of his wonderful work as a priest. I will keep him in my prayers and Masses. May he rest in peace.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Father Nugent. He was not only my theology teacher but also one of my favorite teachers during my years at Notre Dame High School. My journey in faith came to life during those years and so much was the invitation Fr Nugent gave to us students to come to the Lord's table and share in the mass with him. I am honored to have been one of his students.
