Alfred Campanelli Obituary

Alfred Campanelli A funeral Mass for Alfred Campanelli, 78, will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Brockton, Mass. Born July 9, 1925, the son of Franscesco and Lisa Campanelli, he passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 9, 2003, of natural causes, at his Fort Lauderdale, Fla. home. Mr. Campanelli's family immigrated to the Brockton area in 1915. Alfred was raised in Brockton with his three brothers and one sister. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Along with his brothers, he embarked on a four-decade career of community building that produced more than 30,000 single family homes in Massachusetts, Illinois, Florida, Rhode Island, Maryland, Virginia, Arizona and Pennsylvania. Alfred and his brothers revolutionized home building in the New England area during the '50s, '60s and '70s by producing affordable single family communities which allowed thousands of first-time home buyers, including veterans, to realize the American dream of home-ownership. Alfred opened a new Campanelli home building division in the Village of Schaumburg in 1958. Over the next 30 years, while living in Chicago, he built more than 4,000 homes which represented more than 20% of the Schaumburg housing market. Alfred was a philanthropic member of the Schaumburg community, donating land and building the Campanelli School in the early '60s. He also provided college scholarships to Schaumburg high school seniors who demonstrated financial need. In April 2000, Alfred made a donation to the Schaumburg YMCA which enabled them to construct an activity center, field house, and to retire all of their debt. The new facility opened in 2002 and was renamed The Alfred Campanelli YMCA. Alfred also contributed generously to his hometowns in Brockton and Braintree, providing high school scholarships, and funding for construction of Brockton's Campanelli Stadium. Alfred was the brother of Joseph and Nicholas Campanelli, both of Brockton, Ann T. Demarco of Brockton and the late Michael Campanelli; loving companion of Dee Matt; and uncle of several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m Sunday, at the Joseph J. Pica & Sons Funeral Home, 419 Main St., Brockton. Memorials may be made in Alfred's name to the Jimmy Fund - Friends For Life, 681 South St., Needham, MA 02492.
