ANDREW BERTRAM CVERCKO

Andrew Bertram Cvercko Andrew Bertram Cvercko, son of John and Anne Cvercko; brother to John Jr. "Jack" and Michael Cvercko, born in Campbell, Ohio, Nov. 6, 1937, died in his home in Rolling Meadows, Ill., Dec. 3, 2010. A three-year starter at Northwestern University who played on both offensive and defensive lines, Andy Cvercko was named All-American and Academic All-American in 1958, the first Wildcat to accomplish this feat. He was on the Academic All-Big Ten team in 1957, '58 and'59, won the Big Ten Medal of Honor and was inducted into the NU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in electronic engineering, Andy went on to play for Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins. Andy studied technophysics at SMU and started a family with Chris Darbo of Wheaton, Ill. He worked as an electronic engineer at Motorola and researched nuclear magnetic resonance at Argonne National Laboratories. He was the father of Catherine (Donald) Mrofeza, Charles, Margaret Cvercko and Susan (David) Eastwood; grandfather of James, Daniel, Robin, Christopher, Kate, Willie, Donnie and David; and brother of Jack and Michael. He also leaves behind many friends and associates who will always remember him as a gentle giant with rosy cheeks and a scruffy voice.
