A principle of continuing on the spiritual path that I learned from Chris is evident in a prayer of hers. Long ago she asked Gd to help her "to love the unloveable". She would confirm that she lived the answer to this prayer in her daily work with young women in the correctional facility. Chris was pushed and she pushed back, challenging the young women to believe in their goodness within. She was joyful to know when a young life was turned around, no longer set on the dark course of self-destruction and void. In the sadness of her heart, she grieved other's losses and pains. She encouraged me with heartfelt sincerity, too. Though Chris spoke truthfully, she could still be misunderstood. Knowing her the past seven years, she often expressed to me that Gd had been present to her in good times and difficult times. Even though questioning "Why...?" in her last days, she did not walk her journey alone. I'm told that Gd is mystery and Gd calls us into the deep with just enough grace for today. I am a better person for knowing Chris and my encounter with her fortitude will remain in my heart all the days of my life.
