I left this same post on the Miller Funeral Home website, but wanted to cover it here as well as I only learned of George's passing today and wanted the best chance to let Sandy and the kids know how much I appreciated George.
I hadn't heard from George for a while, we would call every couple of years to catch up, so I called his cell phone today (interestingly, exactly a year after his funeral service). We had had multiple conversations about his brain tumor and the surgeries over the past few calls so when the cell number was no longer is service, I feared the worst and did an online search, finding his obituary.
For those of us who are healthy, time tends to go by quickly and usually with less consequence than those who discover they have health issues. I certainly experienced that go to work, go home, get ready for the next day of work and so on for the past year.
I think now of all the great times George and I had, beginning at college. George was the first person I met St. Olaf. He came out of my freshman dorm as I was unloading and introduced himself as my junior counselor. From that moment on, George did more advising and introducing me and my corridor mates to the social aspects of St. Olaf than rein us in, and I loved him for that.
While he as in dental school at the U of Minnesota and I lived in Mpls., we continued to hang out. We enjoyed many of the same books and food, which is why we particularly bonded over the author Jim Harrison. When George moved back to Dundee, he left behind some rather nice pieces of clear pine he had intended to make into a fish aquarium hood, but had never gotten around to doing. I inherited that wood and eventually made valences for two of the windows in my study out of them, using the scallop traced from my French style desk as a pattern.
I'm grateful that I knew George, he has made an important impression on my life

Sandy, Katie and Laura, my thoughts and prayers are with you for strength and peace. George was a great guy to know having met on 3rd floor Hoyme Hall at St. Olaf College and later rooming together in the wilds of south side Minneapolis. We had a lot of shared memories in cooking grilling, his parrot, bartending at Golden Valley country club and enjoying our post Olaf years. All my best to you

My condolences to the family of Dr. Deihs. He was my and my daughter's dentist for the last 14 years. In addition to being the best dentist we ever had, he was a gem of a man. We used to reminisce about Minnesota (we were both graduates of the University of Minnesota), and skiing and the outdoors there. He will be missed.
