James R. "Jimmy" Struck

James R. "Jimmy"Struck, age 70, passed away peacefully on November 1st, 2024, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno, IL, where he had resided since 1995. Born in Oak Park, IL on January 29th, 1954, he was the only child of Elmer P. Struck and Esther Struck, nee Fick, and spent his early years in Bensenville, Elmhurst, and Villa Park.

After serving in the United States Army in Korea from 1971-1973, Jimmy hoped for a career on the stage or in stand-up comedy. A tragic motor vehicle accident in 1977 curtailed those dreams. God had other plans for Jimmy. He survived his injuries with cognitive and physical disabilities but never lost his sense of humor. Instead of becoming the "New Don Rickles," (a favorite phrase of his,) he became a star resident at the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno.

Jimmy was known for his gratitude and "It is what it is" outlook on life and had a lasting, positive impact on the lives of countless staff members, volunteers and friends at the IVHM. He always had a smile, a joke, a kind word or compliment to brighten someone's day. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; cousins, Ron Raidy, George White, Arlene Hess, and Christine Brahm. He will be lovingly remembered by his cousins, Marilyn Raidy, Bob (Penny) Raidy, Stasia White, Valetta Short, Mary (Glen) McMaster, Karin Raidy, Susan (Albert) Reinstein; and numerous second cousins.

Following private services at Steuerle Chapel in Villa Park, Jimmy will be buried next to his parents at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst. An informal Celebration of Life for Jimmy will be held at the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno at a later date.
