John Muchmore Obituary

Dr. John M. Muchmore

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Dr. John M. Muchmore, 88, on January 14, 2025.

John was born on November 9, 1936, to Rose and Maurice Muchmore of Charleston, IL. John attended EIU laboratory schools, graduating in 1954. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1958, and he earned a masters from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate from Northwestern University. His teaching journey included stops in Palatine, IL; Lockport, IL; Crystal Lake School District 155 in Crystal Lake, IL; and then Harper College in Palatine, IL. There, Dr. Muchmore spent 28 years in the Speech-Communications department, from 1967 to 1995.

On August 20, 1960, John married Josephine Riecss. John and Jo raised their family in Crystal Lake before retiring to Elgin, IL.

John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Josephine, and their four children: Teresa (Jeffry) Koebrich of Elgin, IL; Amy (Michael) Fonk of Geneva, IL; Jeffrey (Michele) Muchmore of Glen Ellyn, IL; and Paul (Guadalupe) Muchmore of St. Charles, IL. John is also survived by his brother Dennis (Deb) Muchmore of Holt, MI; and Naples, FL.

John had eight grandchildren that were his pride and joy: Katie, Mary, Jeffrey, Molly (Billy), Amanda, Emily, Michael, and Matthew. John is predeceased by his parents, his brother Patrick Muchmore, and his sister-in-law Pam Muchmore.

John was the kindest, friendliest, smartest man, and he leaves such an empty space to fill. He often said that he was blessed and lucky to be surrounded by great family and friends, but everyone who knew John knows full well that we were the lucky ones, and our lives will be forever richer for having known him.

Visitation and a funeral mass will take place at St. Laurence Catholic Church, 225 Jewett Street, Elgin, IL on Wednesday, January 22. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, with mass immediately following at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Marklund Home in Geneva, IL or The Salvation Army. I have very fond memories of Dr. Muchmore. He was my Speech teacher at Harper College back in the mid-70's. I was 18 years old and had a terrible fear of speaking in front of people. I believe we had to give 6 speeches throughout the semester, and with each speech I gave, Dr. Muchmore continued to compliment me, focusing on all the good things he saw in my speeches, rather than dwelling on the negatives. I ended up getting an A in the class and I felt like I could speak in front of anyone. Over the years I have shared this story about Dr. Muchmore with many people about overcoming my fears when it came to public speaking. I am forever grateful to him for believing in me. My condolences to his family. He was a good man.

He was also an artist! As a kid at Oak Street School in the late 50's, early 60's, he would write your name on a large easel of paper, then proceed to turn it into a caricature drawing. What fun he was for the kids! After school little music sessions with Mr. Evans...just an immensely talented guy who loved teaching and the kids.
