MARJORIE GIESER Obituary

Marjorie Ruth Gieser Marjorie Ruth Gieser, a prolific liturgical artist, died on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at her home in Wheaton. She was 73. The cause was a malignant brain tumor, her husband Dr. Richard Gieser said. In 1976, Mrs. Gieser received her master's of fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. An artist of various media, she found her calling in the creation of art used to augment worship in churches. Mrs. Gieser produced banners, pulpit cloths and vestments of dramatic beauty. She typically created three-dimensional pieces, combining painting with sculptured fabric. Churches throughout the Chicago region and numerous churches around the world use her work. These include Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago, Moody Church, Edman Chapel of Wheaton College, and in church sanctuaries in several states. International locations include Coventry Cathedral of England, St. George Church of Bagdad, Iraq, and Khartoum Evangelical Church of Sudan. While accompanying her ophthalmologist husband on frequent medical mission trips, Mrs. Gieser found ways to brighten hospital wards by painting colorful murals in Schell Eye Hospital of Vellore, India, Dutch Hospital of El Alto, Boliva, and Eye Hospital of Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Marjorie Ruth Nystrom was born May 14, 1938, in Asyut, Egypt. Her parents, Dr. Sigurd Nystrom and Dr. Harriet Skemp, were medical missionaries to Ethiopia. She graduated from Wheaton College, where she met her husband, Richard G. Gieser. They have lived in Wheaton for 45 years. Mrs. Gieser is survived by her husband of 51 years; their son, Dr. Stephen Gieser of West Chicago; daughters, Wendy Partain and Susan Cassel, both of Wheaton; her sister, Nardos Shuler of Londonderry, N.H.; and 12 grandchildren. Summing up her life's work, Dr. Kent Hughes, senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, said, "Marge's creations, and their astonishing combination of color, proportion and purpose, flowed from her merry, selfless heart - which was so much in love with Christ and his church." A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 28 , at 3 p.m. at College Church in Wheaton. Instead of flowers, gifts can be made to Soli Deo Gloria or to Wheaton Academy. Family and friends may sign a guest book at hultgrenfh.com. For more information, please call Hultgren Funeral Home at 630-668-0027.

It has been a long time, Dick, since we were part of Bethany Church in NYC together. But I have heard tidbits from friend Paul Lusher. I was so sorry to hear about Marj's death: she now joins my Alice in the heavenly choir (Alice died in January, 2000 @ age 62 after being ill with cancer for only 6 weeks). Praying that the Great & Good Shepherd will be especially close as you travel through "the valley of the shadow of death." Mr. Van the Music Man (aka Mike Van Doornik)

I am saddened at this news. I remember her creativity as one of the driving forces in her life. All of those huge sales at WCGS! I also spent a few weekends painting crazy murals that she designed at the Wheaton Academy High School. The Geisers are in my thought and prayers.

Dear Gieser family, We are so sorry for your loss and pray God's blessings on each of you. Marg was such a shining witness to knowledge of God's truth. I know many believers (including myself) who were inspired by the example of her life through her family and the marvel of her artwork. "Her children rise up and call her blessed." Prov. 31.28.

I went to Wheaton Academy (WCHS) with two of her children, and my enduring memory of Marge Gieser is watching her draw verses and pictures on the walls in the school halls to brighten our days and encourage our hearts! I've been gone from the Wheaton area for over 30 years and that memory remains! I'm praying for her family as they grieve, but "not as others who have no hope." Jesus is the resurrection and the life!

I remember Marge for her compassion when my wife and I were neighbors. She painted a beautiful mural in our home to encourage my wife during her days of cancer treatments.

I'm lifting Dick and the family up in my prayers during this time of bereavement.

My prayers join the family as we all grieve her passing.
