Paul Erckman Obituary

Paul Clayton Erckman Paul Clayton Erckman, April 29, 1939 to Jan. 3, 2009. Paul is finally free from pain and suffering. He passed away with his loved ones at his side, and he knew that those loved ones that couldn't attend were with him in spirit and prayer. He led a most courageous battle for over 32 years. These past few months have been extremely difficult with challenges that were just unsurmountable. He taught all of us courage, strength, endurance, and his love of family and the need to stay close. He passed away at Edward Hospital, Naperville. His memorial service will be private. Paul's wish was that at this time you would say a prayer for him, and then read or sing Amazing Grace in remembrance him. Paul is survived by his devoted loving wife, Diane (nee Pedersen) of 44 years; his mother, Edith (Clayton Erckman Colfer); his sister, Judith (Mathew Ray Stewart); nephews, Mathew Stewart and Clayton Stewart (Kayla); his mother-in-law, Ethel Pedersen; sister-in-law, Karen (Martin Staff); his cherished niece, Sheri Lynn Staff (Tom Dahl); and his very dear buddy, nephew, Matthew Staff; as well as his extended family of William Erckman Jr. and Debi (Rick Petronzio); nephews, Jason and Vincent Petronzio; and nieces, Nicole Petronzio and Leslie Erckman. Paul was very proud to have served in the Army. He retired from Lucent in June 1999. From that point on, he focused on helping others by volunteering for several charities and handicap organizations. Among his volunteer work that he took pride in was his involvement with Meals on Wheels, The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry of Naperville, Fishing Has No Boundaries (both the Illinois and Wisconsin chapters), Telecom Pioneers, and his membership in the Citizen Police Academy of DuPage County Alumni Association, to name just a few. Paul inspired those without physical challenges with his determination to master most everything on his own. He met his challenges head on with grace, courage and dignity. His inner strength was amazing to all who knew him. While Paul had an exterior that often seemed gruff, inside he was the kindest, gentlest, most compassionate soul anyone could hope to know and love. He had many devoted friends that we'll always be forever grateful to, especially Jack Martin, who was Paul's sidekick and always there during his most difficult times over many years. Paul had a second family in a group called Brothers of the Third Wheel, which is a club that he'd been a member of for over 20 years. He cherished his friendships with all of them. Paul loved animals and over the years had adopted over a dozen dogs and cats, all living very long and happy lives. He demonstrated his strong compassion for all animals and the need to take them under our wings whenever possible. The most mixed-breed pet in need was a true pedigree to him. If you wish to make a donation in Paul's memory to a charity, please make it to Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment (A.D.O.P.T.), 420 Industrial Drive, Naperville, IL 60563 or to an animal shelter or charity of your choice.

My Dear Paul,
I assume I’ll be the last person to put an entry in your “Guest Book”. I have tried to think of something profound or clever to write, but the words just don’t come. All I can tell you is what you already know. I miss you so much, and I love you with all my heart and I always will. Losing you as my earth partner has been very difficult but I know and truly believe that you are finally free of all pain. I have visions of you watching over me, with that twinkle in your eye, and that silly little smile you’d give me when you were trying to make me laugh. There are so many memories that we’ve made ~ So much heartache that we shared ~ So much love that we had for each other in good times and bad. You were and are the love of my life. And I know and believe with all my heart, that some day we WILL be together again.
With all my love ~ on into eternity and beyond,
Diane

Paul is in our thoughts and prayers. He was a wonderful and kind person. He loved his family and those around him. He had so much courage and was such a caring individual. My kids will always remember and treasure their special motorcycle ride with Paul. May Paul finally rest without pain. It was an honor to know Paul.

For the past year, whenever we sing "Amazing Grace", I cry..tears of sadness, yes, but of joy, too, in knowing who you were and where you are now. May our loving Father guide, direct and protect you always, my sweet cousin, Diane.

Dear Paul,

Although a year has passed, I still have not removed your name from my email address list. I just cannot do it. Why? Because every time I see it, I have such good memories. It makes me happy to think about the times you came to visit Diane (& me) at Zierks. You always took the time to put a smile on my face with your humor and kindheartedness....all while dealing with a pain I could never imagine.

I will always remember you with such a passion for life (and your bike) and the way you treated others. I think of you often, especially when times are tough, and I say to myself "suck it up Lis, others have had to endure so much more, and never once complained."

Thank you Paul for touching my heart in such a wonderful way. I know we will meet again, and when we do, I promise I will finally take that ride on your bike.

Paul and Diane

We think of both of you so often. We went to Fisherman's Inn for dinner the other night and remembered the times we ate with you there.

I am sad to say that they closed Fisherman's Inn now but there are so many other places and things that remind us of you guys.

Paul you have always been so involved in so many different things and were always helping others. This time of year always reminds me of you.

When we meet in heaven we will have to find a great place to eat together and share stories.

You are so missed here but I am sure you are much better off and not in pain anymore. I can see your smile on your face.

Well Paul,I remember the first time we met you said How would you like to ride this darn thing with one arm at 70 miles an hour,I knew right then we were going to be best of friends .
It has been a year since you left this earth, but you were on our minds and in our hearts. At every trike-in your name was brought up, talking about the first time we met to last time we saw you.
What a pleasure it has been to know you and to have you in our lives.
We will never forget you ,nor will we ever stop thinking about you and all the joy you brought into our lives just from knowing you.
You will be so missed each and everyday in our hearts.
We will miss you but we are so happy that your pain is over and that you're in a wonderful place with our lord.
It just don't seem right to go to our gatherings and not find you there.
We will meet again someday in the future but until then RIDE FREE .

Dear Paul

I still think of you from time to time, and my heart feels better that I will able to visit with you last year. I realize it was still part of my healing from Karen's loss, and like her you were strong to the very end. I will always have a memory of you with the times we camped, you at work, and you on your trike.

Each of us leave a mark on the world for what we believed in, stood for, and how we treated people. Paul your legacy will live for a very long time.

We are reminded of a Christmas celebration in the past with Paul and Di. We were stranded in Branson with a checkers tournament, icy roads and
excess of meals built around rice and meat products from Kayla's family locker business. We didn't starve and really enjoyed a lot of family time.
Sliding down the hills and eventually getting home safe and sound were wonderful memories!

Mom will miss her weekly telephone conversations with Paul as well as dinners and viists with Diane and
Ethel. We look forward to making new memories when and if you, Di, ever retire!
We miss Youze!
Edith (Mom), Judith, Ray, Mat, Meredith,Clay,Kayla and 4 kids!

It has been almost a year since we lost you but you are still in our hearts. Mort and I have fond memories of the fun times we spent as young marrieds, making fun on a limited budget, napa rice, anyone? We shared your love of your pets and know they brought you comfort in the rough times.
Mort enjoyed seeing your trike and sharing the technical details, just two guys with a love of chrome. You endured much pain in your life but you bore it in a brave and graceful way.
We miss you, my friend.

Paul, I know you recall the first comments you made to me when we moved to Wheaton and became neighbors. I will never forget them and those comments were why I just knew "you would be my kind of people." Thanks for making our lives better.

I was just remembering the other day, it would be a year since you left us. Time has literally flown away. We remember you often and know you are riding with the wind in Heaven. Your time with the trikers have created wonderful memories, which are shared often. We thank you. We remember your last summer with us the most. You rode with us on a joy ride. I reminded you there was a handle to grab if needed. Your response was, "A lot of good that will do me!!" Along the way you were enjoying the lush green rolling fields, thinking they were picture perfect. I remember it like it was yesterday.. Thanks for the memories.

Well Paul, it's been almost a year since you departed to a much better place but it seems like yesterday. I sure miss your friendship and in your face, tell it like it was attitude. You were an original that taught all of us what true courage was. You accomplished things that I though were going to be impossible but somehow you managed to do them. I don't know if you can read this but I sure hope you are once and for all pain free and that wherever you are they have good smooth roads to ride on and plenty of fresh air and sunshine. I knew Paul from FHNB~Hayward, WI. He was one of the reasons I looked forward to going up there every year.We went for my older sister, she loves fishing. My mom let me know about Paul. This is the first time that I have had access to my computer since I heard. I am sad to hear of his passing. However if he was in great pain I am glad that he is no longer suffering. My God be with you as you have to continue in this world. We will keep you in our prayers & think you you during FHNB. Take Care.

Dear Aunt Di,
It still is not very often that I don't think about and miss Uncle "Chump." He was a true example of endurance. In addition to my dad, Paul was a father figure to me too - albeit, the ornery side of a father. (chuckle) I'll always remember the World's Fair in Seattle, trikes, how he somehow managed to drive my stick shift, and the coolest nickname anyone could have, The One Arm Bandit. We love you and are still praying for you.

Love, Clayton Paul, Kayla, Mason, Josie, Hallee

I love you!!!

I enjoyed volunteering with Paul at FHNB-Hayward, WI chapter. He took time to make friendship a reward, interest in how our daughter did fishing, and shared his wisdom how to be a "good camper". We will miss his presence dearly.
