PAUL LATTNER Obituary

Paul Douglas "Doug" Lattner, 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long illness on November 12, 2023. Born February 14, 1934, in Chicago, IL to Paul and Jewell (Bair) Lattner, Doug grew up in Edison Park and spent his summers at the family cottage on Paddock Lake, Wisconsin. He graduated from Taft High School in 1951. He attended Milliken University and transferred to the University of Illinois, Champaign, earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1955. While at Milliken University he met his future wife, Marlene Sweet Price. He married his sweetheart on September 25, 1955, settling in Mt. Prospect where they lived for most of their adult life. After graduating from the University of Illinois, Doug started a long and successful career with Illinois Bell. After the Bell System breakup and several mergers, he ended his career with AT&T. During his career, he obtained his Professional Engineering License. In 1974, he earned a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Chicago. Doug was a member of several professional organizations, most notably IEEE where he held several leadership positions. He and Marlene traveled all over the world attending international IEEE conferences. Doug was a man of many talents, interests and ambitions. He excelled in many sports and enjoyed playing tennis, golf and 16-inch softball with his beloved Jake's Pizza softball team. His great passions were reading, music, hunting and fishing. He was a member of several book clubs and always had his latest read within reach. He was an accomplished pianist, playing mostly by ear. He would sit down wherever he found a piano and entertain family and friends with a wide variety of tunes. He sang in several choirs including the Illinois Bell Choir and in his later years, with the choir at the Moorings of Arlington Hts. where he lived. Most family summer vacations were spent in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. The favorite vacation spot was at Agency Bay in northern Minnesota spending his time fishing for walleye and enjoying his children and grandchildren. Always the engineer, he was known to his family as Mr. Fix-it as he could fix just about anything. He was a life-long learner and believed in being active and ever-curious about life. A man of strong faith, he was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Mt. Prospect. Doug was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marlene, and his parents. He is survived by his children Mark (Debora) Lattner, Carol (Tom) Maloney, and Judy (Brian) Allegretti, his grandchildren Dan (Catherine) Maloney, Jackie (Justin) Spielmann LeBreck, Bill Lattner, Rachel (Sid) Maloney Bose, Laura (Brandon) Spielmann Losey, Michael (Emily) Maloney, Brian Lattner, Kevin Spielmann, Ryan Maloney and Zachary Spielmann, his great grandchildren Lily Bose, Liam Bose, Tommy Bose, Theo Bose, Declan Bose, Emmett LeBreck, Asher LeBreck, Colette LeBreck, Quinn Losey, Greta Losey, Clara Maloney, and Jack Maloney, his sister Barbara Kosmen as well as several nephews. Doug will be dearly missed by all of those whose lives he touched. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 21 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:30 am. The service will follow at 11:30 In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 605 W. Golf Rd, Mount Prospect, IL 60056 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
