Philip Manning Obituary

Philip F. Manning Jr.

A Lifelong Huntley area resident, Philip Francis Manning Jr., age 96, passed away on October 18, 2024.

Philip was born to Philip and Myrtle (Ryan) Manning on October 11, 1928, in Elgin, IL, and was raised on the family farm in Huntley, IL. Early education started at the one room Eakin schoolhouse, where all 8 grades were taught concurrently. He was a 1946 graduate of Huntley High School and continued to help run the family farm with his brother Francis "Duke" Manning. He married Mary Louise Dhamer on July 14, 1954, at St. Mary's church in Gilbert's IL and soon was deployed overseas in the Korean War, which he was a veteran.

After returning from his US Army duties, he began his construction career, operating heavy equipment that ultimately led to being an upper echelon crane operator with the Local 150 Operating Engineers. He was a lifelong member of several Catholic parishes, and his last membership was at St. Mary's in Huntley. He was an usher for many years and enjoyed being a member of the Men's Catholic Cursillo group. He belonged to the American Legion Post 680 and was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, volunteering for local area needs.

Phil loved the great outdoors which included hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and camping. His love of snowmobiling led him to become an instructor for snowmobile safety education. He had many great travel experiences after retirement with MaryLou including fishing in Canada with grandchildren, European trips to several countries and many travel adventures in their fifth wheel trailer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary Lou. His children, Tom (Eileen) Manning, Deb Conatser (Barry), Monica Olson, (Reid), Wayne Manning (Joanna), Margie Van Acker (Henry); brother, Joseph (Nancy) Manning and sister, Mary Rita Collins; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, whom he was very proud of.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia Conley, brother, Francis "Duke" Manning; and daughter, Marlene Manning.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on October 26th, at 11 am at St Mary's Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Ave. in Huntley. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Huntley. Visitation will be prior to mass at the church from 9 to 10:45 am.

In lieu of flowers, masses would be appreciated, or donations can be made in his memory to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, or the EWTN Global Catholic Network.

This photo of my Uncle Phil (R.) and Dad (Duke Manning, L.) was taken on the family farm. It illustrates the solid brotherly connection they shared throughout their lives. Phil took Dad for many rides (and cups of coffee) when Dad couldn't drive anymore and added lots of good cheer to our lives. Thanks and God Bless.

My brother Phil was a rock for me growing up on the farm. I always looked up to him as a leader and friend to so many. He gave me great comfort when we lost our dad Phil, Sr. I will always remember his kindness to me over the loss of my very special dad. May he rest in peace.
The love of the Lord is everlasting, He paid it all on the cross for our redemption.
In Christs love
Mary Rita
