Richard Stearns Obituary

Richard Emerson “Dick” Stearns, 74, of Rachel Drive, Liberty Estates, Attleboro, died on Saturday, May 14, 2005 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Carol A. (Strand) Stearns to whom he was married on September 14, 1963.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 4, 1930, he was the loving son of the late Arthur and Alice (Franklin) Stearns.

Mr. Stearns started his career as a Research and Design Engineer and retired as a Software Programmer for Thermo Electron in Woburn, Massachusetts in 1990.

He was a resident of Sharon, Massachusetts for 35 years prior to moving to Attleboro in August 1999.

Richard had a gift for mathematics and enjoyed solving intricate mathematical puzzles. He also enjoyed reading and challenging games of scrabble and cribbage with his daughter, Martha.

In addition to his beloved wife, Carol, he leaves a daughter: Martha Petersen and her husband, Eric Petersen, of North Attleboro; a son: Andrew Stearns and his wife, Moreen Stearns, of Mansfield; four loving grandchildren: Brian Petersen and Jeffrey Petersen both of North Attleboro and David Stearns and Katie Stearns both of Mansfield; a brother: Gordon Stearns of South Berwick, Maine and a brother-in-law: John V. Strand of Franklin.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend funeral services on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 11:00 AM in the “Commonwealth Chapel” of DYER-LAKE FUNERAL HOME, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, ¾ mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Ruth Blais, of the Salvation Army Bridges of Hope, Attleboro, officiating. Burial will be private.

Following funeral services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of refreshment and fellowship.

Page One of Two Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 AM prior to the commencement of funeral services on Wednesday, May 18, 2005.

Children’s room available during visitation and funeral services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Stearns’ name may be made to the Salvation Army Bridges of Hope, 5 Mechanic Street, Attleboro, MA 02703.
