INVERNESS - Robert McGrath, age 77, died Thursday afternoon, November 30, 2017, at Presence Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines. He passed peacefully and surrounded by the love of his family. A family man, honest and devoted, Bob will be deeply missed. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 11, 2017 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Palatine with the Rev. Timothy Fairman, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Bob was born October 23, 1940 in Flushing, NY to John Bernard and Madeline (Areson) McGrath. He graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1959. He attended United States Military Academy (West Point, NY), and graduated from Michigan State University in 1964. He married Christine "Chris" Scanlan on September 14, 1968 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Bob retired from Illinois Tool Works in 2005 after almost 30 years with the company. He is survived by his wife, Chris; children, Maureen (Steve) Hahn of Lake Wylie, SC, Sheila (Matt) Edstrom of Tower Lakes, IL, Craig McGrath of Chicago, IL, Michael (Shannon) McGrath of Elmhurst, IL, and Kathleen McGrath of Alexandria, VA; 15 grandchildren; and sister, Barbara Logan of Pompano Beach, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Brian (Kathleen) McGrath, sister, Jane Crossley, and brothers John McGrath and Peter McGrath.
