SANDRA WALKER Obituary

Sandra R. Walker, (nee Polkow), 68, a Tong Ren therapist and operatic soprano, died suddenly in her sleep on Sept. 8 in her Naperville home. The daughter of late frozen food pioneer Marvin R. Polkow and late nurse Elaine M. Polkow, Ms. Walker was born on Dec. 17, 1947 in Oak Park and grew up in Elmhurst. In her early years, Walker was a vocal prodigy singing leads in musicals and won a scholarship to study voice with legendary operatic baritone Tito Gobbi in Italy. She received a vocal performance degree from NIU and did her graduate work at the Manhattan School of Music, performing operatic roles in New York before returning to Italy. During her performance time in Chicago, Ms. Walker was prima donna of Repertory Opera Theatre in Oak Park where she performed leading roles in operas of Purcell, Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Holst, Poulenc and Menotti, among others. She also sang the title role for the world premiere of Raymond Wilding-White's three-act opera "Yerma," based on the Federico Garcia Lorca play. Ms. Walker was also a regular performer of the Wagner Society of America, the Spoleto Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. Ms. Walker possessed a large voice, unusual for a lyric soprano, which made her a natural to perform tragic Puccini heroines, her specialty. She is featured in the title role on the Chicago Music Association's 1975 recording of "Madama Butterfly" and sang "Un bel di" on the Italian RAI television network with the NATO band. After retiring from the stage to raise a family, Ms. Walker continued to sing across naval bases in Europe and the United States as a soloist with her husband, Navy band leader, pianist and composer Barney Walker. The couple moved back to the Chicago area in 1998 when Ms. Walker created and directed the St. Joan of Arc parish children's choir in Lisle and taught voice students at home. Sacred music was a lifelong love for Ms. Walker, a devout Roman Catholic. She was proud to be the first woman ever asked to cantor at her home parish after Vatican II and most recently had served as a cantor and chorister at St. Irene's Church in Warrenville. Of all of her international performances, Ms. Walker was most proud to have sung Schubert's "Ave Maria" at the convent and in the presence of Sr. Lucia, visionary of Our Lady of Fatima. After successfully seeking relief from fibromyalgia from Tong Ren Therapy founder Tom Tam, Ms. Walker became a Tong Ren therapist and made a mission of offering healing and hope to others through Chi Gong. She hosted a weekly televised Tong Ren therapy session that was an inspiration to many. Ms. Walker is survived by her husband of over 39 years, Barney, sons Rob (Erin) and Doug (Robin); sisters Judy and Bonnie (Jim); brothers Gary (Paula) and Dennis; niece Jen (Mike); nephews Dave (Katie), Eric (Bailey) and Alex; great-nieces Annie and Molly and great-nephews Jack, Ryne and Finn. Visitation 3-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 5015 Lincoln Ave. (Rt. 53), Lisle. Mass 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 St. Irene's Catholic Church, 28W441 Warrenville Rd., Warrenville. To Barney and the Family,

We only recently had the pleasure of meeting Sandra at a convention with her husband Barney and her son Doug in Niagara. It truly was a great honor to meet her and we looked forward to future discussions with her. She was so polite, courteous and had a infectious smile. Her loss was shocking to Jen and I as soon as we heard.

Our heart felt condolences to the family.

Jennifer & Michael Combs.

Dear Barney, Chicago Tong Ren and all of the wonderful members of our community,

I am writing on behalf of all of us in the Boston area to express our deep sense of loss, as Sandy has most unexpectedly (for us) passed on. I think it has taken us these several days to digest the news, and to allow the words to come. To reach out to Barney, to Karen, to Jordan and Leena, Sheila, Gary, Marybeth, Lori and to all of those, ALL OF US, who loved Sandy, especially Tom. She was a songbird, with melody and voice that healed, transformed and along with Barney could make us laugh. She was bold and pioneering recognizing the value and healing power of Tong Ren. She created the conference call and classes to share this knowledge. She gave freely with compassion and seemed to always be in the light, surrounded by and emanating positivity and hope.

Each of us as individuals, and together as a community find it hard to imagine what this unexpected loss is like for you. Especially you Barney whenever you came to visit we would lovingly refer to you and Sandy as peas in a pod'.

Sandy leaves to us her example of a life well lived, well shared, having taught us the value of generosity and song. Tom, and all of us have been deeply touched by her life.

With love, Janice

I met this lovely lady with the beautiful voice and her husband Barney once, a couple of years ago, when they took me in and provided me with bed and breakfast . I was in Chicago to visit with Dennis and it turned out I needed a place to stay. They generously provided this stranger with room at the inn, and entertained me besides. I am very sorry to hear this news and I send my sincere and deepest sympathy to Barney and Dennis and the entire family.

Dear Barney & family~
I was so blessed to have met Sandy and to have spent many of my last Tuesday evenings with her for Tong Ren therapy. She was a kind, warm and loving soul and I will MISS her.

Dear Skip and Family,
Sandy's passing is a powerful loss for our world, but she has gained the threshold of the home she always prayed for. Her race is run and her memories are imprinted upon our lives. May we learn to serve as she served, pray as she prayed, and laugh as only she could laugh. What a wonderful gift to us she has been and let us remember (ICorinthians 15:54-58) death has been swallowed up in victory. God bless you in your grieving and may you rise up the richer, knowing that Our Savior has prepared a place for us, too.

Love, Doug and Linda Haney and family
