Slavko Stokovich Obituary

Slavko Stokovich of Libertyville Funeral services for Slavko Stokovich, 92, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at The Most Holy Mother of God Monastery in Third Lake. Born Nov. 3, 1909, in Pozega, Yugoslavia, he passed away Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at Condell Medical Center, Libertyville. Interment will be in the monastery cemetery following the services. In 1934, Mr. Stokovich received his legal degree from the Law Faculty of Belgrade in Yugoslavia. He then enrolled in officer's school and was commissioned a captain in the Royal Yugoslavian Army and assigned as a judge to the military court. He was taken prisoner by the Germans in 1941 during World War II and remained in a prison camp until 1945 when he was freed by the Americans. He came to the United States in 1947 and has lived in Libertyville for the past 53 years. Mr. Stokovich operated Lake Villa Nursing Home from 1950 to 1977, when he moved it to Libertyville, which today is the Libertyville Manor Extended Care Facility. Slavko was a former member of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Libertyville and The Most Holy Mother of God Monastery in Third Lake. He was the treasurer for the monastery, served on the diocesan council and in many other capacities of the Orthodox Church. He started the Kosovo Relief Fund, which later became the St. George Charity Fund, providing international support for poverty stricken families, children, seminarians, victims of wars and countless people with many needs. He was best known for his generosity and will long be remembered for the legacy of philanthropic work he leaves behind. He and his wife were great benefactors for The Most Holy Mother of God Monastery, donating the Iconastas, the icon altar screen, which is hand carved and imported from Greece. Slavko was awarded the Order of St. Sava, one of the highest awards given by the patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; sons, Milan, John (Amy) and Nick (Debbie) Stokovich, all of Libertyville; grandchildren, Nicholas, Alyssa and Matthew, all of Libertyville; sister, Ljubica, living in Yugoslavia; and many other loving family members living in Chicago, St. Louis, Mo. and Yugoslavia. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, at the monastery, where the Pomen service will begin at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. George Charity Fund, P.O. Box 371 Grayslake, IL 60030. Arrangements were made by the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, Libertyville. Friends may visit www.dailyherald.com/obits to express condolences and sign the guest book. Dear Dragica, John and the rest of the Stokovich family,

Primite saucesce. We extend our deepest sympathy. All the things that were great about your husband, father also make this loss that much harder. He was such a big part of your life (for that matter a big part of all of our lives). We just never see those people as passing away. It just seems like they will be with us forever. How wonderful, though, that you had such a wonderful, long, blessed marriage. Such love can only fill you with happy memories and provide inspiration for the rest of us. He was an inspiration to me just by being there, by sitting quietly with his loving family at the Gracanica Hall, by humbly accepting praise for his contributions, by intently watching the Gracanica folklore dancers perform at the Libertyville Manor for St. Sava. While he could buy many things, he seemed to appreciate the ordinary activities involving his family and his church the most. I will be forever appreciative for all the effort...monetary and otherwise...that he and your whole family put into the Serbian causes and specifically Gracanica. Your imprint is everywhere.

Neka je vjecna slava i hvala Cika Slavku a vama iskreno saucesce. Vjecna mu Pamjat. Bog da mu Dusu Prosti.
