STEPHEN RIESS Obituary

Stephen Riess, 69, of Hawthorn Woods, died on November 8th, 2022, after a brave battle with cancer over 2 years. Steve was born in Evanston, IL, January 5th, 1953, the second child of Hans and Gladys Riess (Ross). A lifelong lover of nature, he spent his summers as a boy camping, fishing, and learning to identify all variety of tree and bird. Community service was a defining feature of Steve's life. He served as a Hawthorn Woods village trustee for over 23 years. He founded Active Citizens for Responsible Expansion (ACRE) and was instrumental in blocking the construction of a shopping mall on Old McHenry Road, preserving 110 acres of land which remain undeveloped to this day. Steve will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his quick wit, love of good food, and his love for the outdoors, where he felt most at home. He is survived by his loving wife, MaryAnn; daughters, Sarah and Rachel; grandson, Gabriel; and brother, Martin. A memorial service will be held in remembrance of Steve on Sunday, December 4th, from 1-5pm at Hawthorn Woods Village Barn at 2 Lagoon Drive, Hawthorn Woods, IL.

MaryAnn, I am involved in a Bible study and one our questions was about feeling hopeless and who helped. Your husband provide me with his assistance during one of my down times while unemployed. We were friends a neighbors in Niles. But Steve proved to a source of strength and support for me and I have always looked upon him as a friend and mentor and I am thankful that he was a part of my life when I really needed it. I am saddened to have recently learned of his passing. It was because of the bible study that I thought of him. God Bless you and your family. Mike Jurgensen

Steve would not remember me, but I will never forget him. He fought the good fight to make sure Taubman shopping mall would never be built. He was at all of the meetings at Barrington High School and motivated others to join the fight.

Then he looked out for all of Hawthorn Woods as a trustee. I always took comfort in Steve being in this roll because I knew he was not an easy yes man

God Bless you Steve and your family

I worked with Steve at a recruiting firm before he started his own company. He stayed in touch with his former team mates and brought us together at events he organized. He was a caring and honorable person, it was a pleasure to know him.

I had no idea before today. Steve and I coached soccer together for a number of years. We went to the same high school and had the same birthday (January 5th). Just called my wife, Deb.

I was a good friend of Steve's since high school.
Our families have been getting together for 40 years. We went on many family camping trips together, and Stave's wacky sense of humor would keep us in stitches. He will be missed by many.
