ST. CHARLES - Suzanne C. "Suzie" Sheaffer (nee Dahleen) passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, August 7, after a 4-month long battle with pancreatic cancer. The fourth of nine children, she was born Aug. 12, 1954, in Des Moines, Iowa. She spent her childhood in Iowa, Oseo, Minn. and then finally in the Western Suburbs of Chicago where she remained for the rest of her life. She had a 35-year-long career with the Central DuPage Hospital system as a radiologic technician. She cared deeply about her work and took great pride in receiving recognition 'stars' from her patients. However, she was most passionate about her volunteerism with the Girls Scouts and then with the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in St. Charles. She enjoyed traveling the world on Catholic pilgrimages with her husband, gardening, playing Scrabble, and hosting parties by her pool. Dedicated servant of God, Suzie took great comfort in her faith throughout her illness. She told all of her caregivers and doctors that she was not afraid to die because she knew she was going to Heaven, but that she felt like she still had a lot for which to live. She was characteristically stubborn until the end, but finally found peace. She leaves behind the love of her life and husband of 38 years, John; and their beloved five children, Greta Abers (Daniel), John Sheaffer (Shanna), Anthony Salerno (Rose), Amanda Wright (Tom), and Abigail Sheaffer. A doting 'Nana,' she also leaves behind 14 grandchildren - the light of her life. She will be dearly missed by three brothers, two sisters, many nieces, nephews, extended family, and scores of friends she gathered throughout her life. She is preceded in death by her father (James) and mother (Patricia); sister (Mary) and brothers (Matthew and Mark); and grandson (Walter). A visitation will be held at Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles on Friday, Aug. 12, from 4-8:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church (downtown) on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 10:30 A.M., followed by interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Patrick's Church.

Its hard to believe it's been over two years since we lost Suzie. She was one of my favoriate people on the planet - My Sister, my friend, and one of the kindest souls I've ever know.
Suzie had a gift for seeing people - their struggles, their potential, their work, especially their Faith. She lived with an open heart and was passionate about lifting others up, special through her work with the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. Each year, sho poured her energy into the Walk fo the Poor, rallying friends and family to support those in need. it wasn't just a cause to her - it seemed like a calling.
As the walk approaches again next month, get out a walk in her memory and for everything she stood for Compassion, dignity, and our faith community. If you knew Suzie, you knew her generosity wasn't just something she did - it was who she was.

My Sister Suzie was a giver and now she is still calling on you to give. You see one of her favorite things at St. Vincent de Paul was the Friends of the Poor Walk. The last few years have been amazing strong attendance. But if you can't make this year on September 21, 2024, then please consider a donation on Suzie's behalf. The SVdP Society now calls this walk the Suzie Sheaffer Friends of the Poor Walk.
