Rena Ward Obituary

SCOTTSBORO - Mrs. Rena Wallace Ward, 92, died Oct. 9, 2009, at Highlands Medical Center after an extended illness.
A descendant of pioneer families, Mrs. Ward was born on Oct. 22, 1916, the 10th child of Jefferson Davis and Sallie Parks Sumner Wallace. She married Raymond Ward in May 1935, and moved across the street from her family home where she resided for the rest of her life.
She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the Friendship Sunday School class and served on the church council.
A lifelong Democrat, she served four terms on the Jackson County Board of Registrars. She was also a long time member of the Jackson County Democrats Club, and was five times elected to serve on the Jackson County Democratic Executive Committee.
An avid Alabama fan, she was honored on the occasion of her 90th birthday by her son with the establishment of the Raymond L. and Rena W. Ward Endowed Scholarship at the University of Alabama.
She was preceded in death in 1991 by her husband of 56 years, Raymond L. Ward; four brothers, John Sumner Wallace, James Exum Wallace, Ninian Parks Wallace and Robert S. Wallace of Scottsboro; five sisters, Tennie Wallace Miller, Fannie Wallace Woosley, Mary Wallace Phillips, Kate Wallace, and Lucy Wallace Lewis all of Scottsboro.
She is survived by one son, Larry Ward of Birmingham.
Funeral services under the direction of Scottsboro Funeral Home will be held Monday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Steven Screws, senior minister of Scottsboro First United Methodist Church, Dr. Ralph Bates, Senior Minister Emeritus, and the Rev. Keith Thompson, Senior Minister, First United Methodist Church, Birmingham, officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery on land which was once part of the Wallace family farm.
Pallbearers will be J. William White, Johnny Ivey, William J. Parks, Stephen M. Kennamer, Kenneth Shelton, Matt Adams, Fred Major, John Graham, Donnie Baxter and Randy Fail.
For those wishing to make memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, the family suggests the First United Methodist Church, 1105 S. Broad Street, or the Raymond L. and Rena W. Ward Endowed Scholarship at the University of Alabama, in care of Susan G. Krell, 1233 Campground Circle, Scottsboro, AL 35769.
