Donald DelManzo Obituary

Donald Dewees DelManzo, Jr., died in his home on 2/18/2022, after a brave battle with cancer. He was 79. Don was born on 12/25/1942, to Donald D. and Joan (Andre) DelManzo in Doylestown. The family lived in Southampton, and Don hitch-hiked to LaSalle College High School in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He received a full NROTC scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, where he played soccer and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering, and was the top NROTC and engineering student, and was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy. He then earned a master’s degree at Colorado State University and was finishing his doctorate when he received orders to the Civil Engineer Corps Officers’ School. He deployed with the Seabees to Puerto Rico and Vietnam and was awarded several Commendation Medals. After 20 years of Naval service, as a civilian Don was the head of facilities for Amherst College, Lafayette College, SUNY Albany, Northern Virginia University, and Siena College where the students voted him outstanding administrator for his attention to their needs. At all institutions Don treated his employees with fairness and respect, helped them advance their careers and improved their work environments. He was a member of Rotary International. Don was an avid racquetball and handball player and golfer, and a coach of youth soccer, baseball and ice hockey. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Martha and his children Nathanael (Angel), Jason Woodrow, Joshua (Rie), and Brietta Larmon (Brian), his grandchildren Hazel, Ella, Noah and Robbie and his step-grand-daughters in Nebraska, Ava and Alex, and to all was known fondly as the Ogre or Ogie. He is also survived by his sister Patrice Langlois (William), a niece Aimee Bock (Steven) and nephew Will Langlois (Burt). He was preceded in death by his parents and his dear friend Steven Pentlen. Don was a life-long devout Catholic and was a communicant of Saints Peter and Paul in West Chester. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Villa Maria Academy Building Fund, 330 Central Ave., Malvern, Pa., 19355. Services will be announced at a later date. I thank you for your loving and thoughtful comments about Don! I was there with him when he died. He was gone in 5 minutes. He had received 3 sacraments that day. He was trying to climb the stairs to bed and went down on his knees at the top. Thank you again

I had the privilege of working for Don at Siena College. He always took the time to listen, was always available and would work tirelessly to handle whatever challenge came our way.

He was very knowledgeable about all aspects of facilities management and was generous with his time and always ready to help teach and support those around him.

His interests included creating special spaces on campus that would be used and enjoyed by the campus community. Many of the spaces and buildings on campus would not exist without Don´s vision and ability to execute a wide variety of projects from idea to completion.

Don´s visions included helping to develop a more robust organization. He was supportive of all the teams and helped to create new organizational structures that better served the campus community. He was very supportive and encouraging for me personally, helping to mentor and provide guidance as well as being supportive of me taking classes on campus.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Martha and all of his family members during this difficult time.

Don was a loving, beautiful human being. He, my husband Pete and their best friend Steve were blessed to have such a wonderful friendship. When my husbands was in the hospital fighting for his life, Don came to Albany Med and visited often. Even when Pete was not really conscious, Don was there, and sat silently with me, offering me an unspeakable gift of comfort. I thank him for that, and will always hold him in my heart and prayers.
To his family and friends, my deepest sadness and heartfelt condolences. He was a wonderful man, and the world´s light dimmed when he passed.

Martha and family,
I worked directly under D3 at Siena during his tenure at Siena College. He was so supportive, kind, generous, and was a very intelligent man. While his methods could be sometimes unconventional, he got the job done and always respected everyones time. No job in Facilities was ever unimportant. He respected each individual and truely cared about there well being. I had so much respect for him. I recall a time when an employee was having a family crisis and he took the time to offer private conversation and support. He was always promoting and supporting "family first". He always spoke so lovingly of his family. I saw him last 2 years ago before Covid hit. I always enjoyed catching up with him. My Mom passed the same day, so I am sure I will especially remember D3 fondly on this date. You and your family will be in my prayers. Jeanne Waterbury
