Edward Jenkins Obituary

Edward W. Jenkins, Jr., 93 of West Chester, PA, affectionately known as "G-Pop", peacefully passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024 surrounded by family. He was born April 13, 1930 in Hazleton, PA, son of the late Edward and Marcella Jenkins. Ed resided in Hazleton for 72 years before moving to Hershey's Mill, West Chester, PA where he resided for over 20 years. Ed attended the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf where he met Toby, the love of his life. After graduation in 1953, he worked in the family owned business, GR Steckert Construction Company until 1975. He then worked for Gebhardt Billiard and Bowling Company until his retirement in 1992. Ed was a devoted member and leader of the deaf community after losing his hearing at the age of 2. He was a multiple term officer of Wilkes Barre Deaf Club, Pennsylvania Athletic Association of the Deaf, and the Pennsylvania Society for the Advancement of the Deaf. He was a long standing board member of Elwyn, Media, PA. Throughout his years of service he was honored for his outstanding contributions. Athletics played a significant role in Ed's life as a player, coach, athletic director and fan. He was elected to the Eastern Athletic Association of the Deaf Hall of Fame in 1992. Ed was the ultimate cheerleader for his grandchildren's athletic events from the time they played t-ball through the conclusion of college. Ed was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Toby Sonia Jenkins (nee Shiekman). Left to cherish his loving memory: daughter Joan Gravatt (Phil) of Lewes, DE, and son Daniel Jenkins (Lisa) of Glen Mills, PA; grandchildren Amanda Robinson Plaster (Dustin), Brady Robinson (Lacy), Paige Jenkins Tankle (Matthew), and Dylan Jenkins; great granddaughters Claire, Hazel, Zoey and Harper. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed's memory can be sent to The PA Society for the Advancement of the Deaf (PSAD), c/o Lynn Stroud, Secretary, P.O. Box 42, Middlebury Center, PA 16935. Arr. by The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382, 610-431-9000. Online condolences www.donohuefuneralhome.com.

I am at a loss of words to express how I feel about my dearest friend, Ed. He was such a pillar for the deaf community, his family and all walks of life. His smile was infectious. So many memories of him comes in my mind and he will be deeply missed. Ed had earned his wings and can fly high to his dearly beloved. Prayers to the Jenkins family and may the memories be eternal.

My heart aches in hearing of dear Ed's passing. Your father-grandfather's life was one of life's truest blessings and may his memory comfort you in the days ahead.
I had gained a "friend for life" during my time with him through PSAD. Ed's boundless energy, "off-the-cuff" wits, words of wisdom and genuine love will be missed. I will miss the presence of one of my favorite friends till the end of my days, reflecting on his immeasurable zest for life and the love for his family and the Deaf community.
Again, my heartfelt condolences to his family. Dearest Ed, rest easy on the wing of eternity, "going home" to your beloved Toby.

Dear Dan, Lisa and family, Please accept our condolences on the loss of your father. We were quite impressed with the impact that your father made on the family and on others with whom he had contact. He was surely a gentleman who had a wide circle of friends. While we did not have many contacts with your father, he was always very pleasant and happy. We will keep all of you in our prayers during this time of loss. God bless all of you. Love, Bart and Helen Proger

Dear Joan, Daniel and Families,
If only we knew what to say to comfort you! But words cannot say what is in our hearts, nor tell you how deeply we feel for you in your sorrow.
We loved your father, too, Joan and Daniel, and we´ll never get over missing him. You know we share your grief, but how we wish that sharing it could lighten the burden for you!
We send you all our love, Joan and Daniel, and all our sympathies.
Sincerely,
June and Bill Moran

Ed always had friendly, funny and smart comments. He never forgot to greet anyone he knew. His face and presence will be deeply missed around here. I´m so glad to have known him. Saw him last in September - he was still his great self, ageless and full of energy. \|m/

Ed was always smiling, wonderful and looked so handsome for his age. I (Bertha) remember him telling me that he went to a deaf club when he was young for the first time and met my father. My father introduced him to new friends. Ed had been wondering about if my father had a family after he passed away. Ed finally met me, about 60 years later. Also his daughter Joan was an interpreter for my daughter Maribeth when she was in school and Ed was on the board of Elwyn Valley View where I worked. He lived near my house. We saw each other once in a while. It was always nice to see him. It´s really a small world He will always be in our thoughts. My family and I will miss him and never forget him.
