I never heard anyone say an unkind word about Uncle Fred. I loved the summers I spent at the bay when he and his family would come down on the weekends. I have such wonderful memories out on the boat. What a wonderful man!

Freddie "Freckles" Reed, was my cousin whom I adored. Grandma Eyler called him Freckles because he reminded her of Alfalfa on "My Gang" TV Show,Black and White no less! Sorry freddie I know you hated that! But it was so cute!
When he went into the navy he came to Pap and Grandma Eylers for a visit. (We used to have the best Family Sunday meals and close family times in those days, I miss them so much.) freddie wanted to go play golf and asked who wanted to go with him I said I did but did not know how to play. He said he would teach me, no one else wanted to go so off we went to Spring Grove, Pa. I was going into 9th grade that year. When we got there he took me to the driving range and showed me how to hold the club and hit the ball. We practiced quite a while. Finally he thought I was ready to play so we went to play golf. I was not so good, and he was very patient and encouraging telling me I could do it, keep trying. All of a sudden a miracle happened, on the 8th hole... I hit the ball hard and it landed on the green! I still see the look of shock and suprize on his face. It makes me smile. When I was up to hit it again it landed in the cup! Freddie in shock shouted "OH MY GOD, YOU MADE PAR!" "I cab't believe it, you made par!" I started jumping up and down and yelling "I made par I made par, ....what is par?
He laughed and told me it was a good thing and quite a thrill to do. we laughed about that for a long time after. He took me for ice cream sodas after and when we got home he bragged about me making par to everyone. He became my Hero that day.! Before he left he asked me to write to him about school and family and stuff so we became pen pals. He sent me a picture of him in the Navy Uniform and I showed it to all my girlfriends and told them he was my boyfriend in the Navy! He got a kick out of that one.
A few years ago we were at a family function and Freddie brought a couple cases of homemade jewlery. beautiful polished stones, necklaces and earrings. He did not want to sell them they were his gifts to all of us who wanted some. He came over to me and told me to pick something out as he knew I would appreciate them and wear them. he was very humble about his work and did not think they were "all that good", but they were and good enough to sell, yet he said no it was just a hobby. I told him I would wear them at work that they were very pretty. I got so many compliments on them when I wore them.I will always wear them and remember freddie with a smile and a tear. He was a great Cousin to have as well as a Great Dad, Brother, Uncle Granddad and Husband to the love of his life, Roxanne.
May your heart be healed with the memories of his love, laughter, gentle Spirit, and sweetness he gave to all he cared for. "Freddie, thank you for being a great cousin to me, friend and golfing buddy,Pen Pal....fond memories always, till we meet again someday..Rest In Peace
