James Herr Obituary

James S. Herr, Founder of Herr Foods Inc., dies at age 87 James S. Herr, founder of Herr Foods Inc., maker of Herr's line of snacks, passed away of complications from pneumonia on April 5, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Miriam Hershey Herr. Together they had five children, June Gunden, wife of Doug Gunden, of Peachtree City, Ga., James M. Herr, husband of Lois Herr, of Nottingham, Edwin Herr, of Nottingham, Gene Herr, husband of Terri Herr, of Kirkwood, and Martha Thomas, wife of Daryl Thomas, of Kirkwood. Jim is survived by 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Jim Herr was born in Lancaster, Pa., on August 6, 1924. He is survived by two brothers, Christian Herr of Willow Street and Ira Herr of Ephrata, as well as a sister, Anna Mae Herr of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Herr Metzler in 1974. Jim started his snack food business in 1946 with the help of his then fiance, and now wife, Miriam. The business grew from a small potato chip manufacturing operation to a producer of a full line of snacks. Today Herr's products can be found in most states and in numerous foreign countries. While retaining his title of Founder, Jim Herr retired from his role as Chairman of the Board of Herr Foods Inc., when his eldest son, J.M. Herr, assumed that role in 2005. Until his passing, J.S. continued to serve on the Board of Directors. Jim Herr was very active in his community and his church, Mount Vernon Mennonite. In addition he provided leadership on numerous boards dedicated to evangelism, philanthropy, and free enterprise. Following a private interment for the immediate family, plans include public visitation next weekend and a memorial service in several weeks. For details, visit: www.herrs.com; or call 1-800-344-3777. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the James S. Herr Foundation, P.O. Box 300, Nottingham, PA 19362 (which supports evangelism around the world). Arrangements are being handled by the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., Oxford.

I was truly blessed to have met Jim and Mim while serving as interim pastor of their Mt. Vernon Mennonite Church( 2008). Jim's clear Christ-honoring testimony (in business and personal life) was a blessing to me then and, encouraging in reflection now. The Lord is faithful to all who trust Him, and especially to those who serve Him faithfully. "Well done, faithful servant".

Though just learning of his homegoing, I really needed to express my sincere condolences to the entire Herr Family, Church Family and Corporate Family of this wonderful man. As a minister here in Philadelphia, I appreciate all of Mr. Herr's tireless dedication to making his many fine products available to ministries and charities, as well as his commitment to evangelism. He spent a good part of his life letting people know that they need to make the Gospel, that the Herr family has come to embrace, yours! I look forward to meeting him on the other side!

With my deepest sympathy to the Herr family.I know your heart is heavy with the lost of a husband and father, but just remember God knows best. I will always remember the times when he would come around and sell the large can of potato chips each week. Those were the good old days and times. He would come and take us to Sunday School, Bible School and also Prayer meetings. I remember the times we had at Christmas time after going out and singing carols we would come back to the house and have cookies and hot chocolate.
I know it is a time of sorrow but you have so many blessed days and events with which he was involved in your life. When times come that you think all hope is lost. just remember the good times and that God does not put on us anymore than he thinks we can bear. Just hold on to God's unchanging hand
