Rita Adamson Obituary

Rita M. Adamson, 94, formerly of West Chester, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, after a long and full life. She was the wife of the late John W. Adamson, who predeceased her in 2012 and with whom she shared 61 years of marriage. Born in Philadelphia, she was the third child born to James F. and Margaret McGrath Sullivan and graduated from West Catholic Girls High School in 1939. She met her future husband, John, while both were working at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. They married in 1950 and started a family. As John was in the Navy, they moved often in the early years of their marriage, taking them to California and Hawaii before settling in Havertown. John’s love of horses brought them out to West Chester in 1965. They were active members of SS. Simon and Jude Catholic Church. After raising their six children, Rita went back to work at Catholic Social Services in West Chester from where she retired after 17 years. Later, she volunteered at the Children’s Cancer Research Thrift Store in Newtown Square. At Exton Senior Living, where Rita lived for over 5 years, she was known for her singing voice and her knowledge of words and trivia. The two activities that gave her the most pleasure were crossword puzzles and the ‘Word of the Day’. She also enjoyed Bingo, Pokeno and collecting candy prizes to give to her visitors. Rita leaves behind six children: Kristine (Mark McClintock), Dorothy Heinz (Sam), Susan O’Sullivan, John (Norma Arias), David (Maria Feeney), and Steven Sullivan; and eight grandchildren: John Heinz, Daniel Adamson, Paul Heinz, Ellen Carman (Roger), Matthew McClintock, Katharine McClintock, John Adamson and Ethan Adamson. Funeral services are private. Contributions in her memory may be made to Chester County Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia or a charity of your choice. Margie Adamson

October 15, 2016

So sorry for the lose of your Mother. She was a neat lady and a special person. I enjoyed knowing her all these years. One thing I will always remember is how she saved old calendars and used the old ones when the calendar was the same for that year. I have done that many times and always think of her when I do.

Rita will be missed. May you be comforted by all the people that loved your Mother.

Much Love,
Margie Adamson
