Alvis Henderson Obituary

Alvis Charles Henderson, Jr. died on January 8, 2023, after spending a happy, fulfilling Christmas with his family, joining his Savior and his beloved wife, Carol, in eternal life.

Born in 1928, Al grew up in Memphis and attended Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, Missouri with his late brother, Jimmy. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History at [then] Memphis State University and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Al spent most of his career as a systems analyst for the Defense Department working in Memphis, Dayton, Ohio and Albany, Georgia. After his retirement, he volunteered for more than 20 years at LeBonheur Children's Medical Center.

Al was an Army Veteran and a lifelong member of First Baptist Church Memphis where he met and married Carol. He served as a deacon and worked in the nursery.

Al loved to take his daughters fishing and watch football with them. When the grandchildren came along, he also taught them to fish and took them on many hikes in North Carolina, a place he and Carol considered their home away from home. Most of all, Al was happiest when he was surrounded by family.

Throughout his life, Al found great joy and fulfillment in his deep and abiding faith in the Lord, in his marriage, and in his role as a father. He was a talented artist who blessed many with his paintings. He was known for his sense of humor and positivity, and he showed kindness to those he knew and those he didn't. That was, perhaps, his greatest legacy.

He is survived by his daughters, Ashley Henderson McHugh of Greenville, South Carolina and Laurie Henderson of Memphis, his adored grandchildren, Stephen McHugh, Jr. and Margaret McHugh, his sisters-in-law Glenda Stewart and Anne Simmons, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to First Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee and LeBonheur Children's Hospital.

Funeral Services for Mr. Henderson will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, at 2:00pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home in the Fireside Chapel. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Anyone that met Al at Lebonheur East Surgery Center always felt joy due to his happy smile and how he made all the patients, staff and doctors feel so comfortable and important , we teased him about how he needed a pay raise for all the years he served as a volunteer and he would just laugh. RIP sweet Al and thank you for your service We will miss you .
