Charles Nourse Obituary

Rev. Dr. Charles "Bill" Nourse December 17, 1942-March 11, 2023

A life-long resident of Memphis, Bill was a graduate of Catholic High for Boys Class of 1960 and played the saxophone in the band. He continued his education at Memphis State University. He then enlisted in the Navy before returning to college. He received a Doctorate in Higher Education in 1983.

Bill was an avid reader and had many interests. He worked for Crye-Leike Realtors for several years. He volunteered for the Memphis Police as a reserve officer for 41 years.

Bill was ordained on March 4, 2000, as a permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church. He was assigned to the Church of the Holy Spirit. He also worked at The Diocese of Memphis in the marriage tribunal. He loved to do the Homily at Mass.

He decided to teach school and was at the Immaculate Conception High School teaching sophomore girls for five magical years. He said this was the best job he ever had.

Survived by his loving wife Christine Mathewson Nourse. They would have been married 30 years on May 7. His daughter, Rebecca Otts (Lee); his son, Will Nourse; three grandchildren: Michael Benham (Brittany), Madison Harrington (Devin), and Mary Benham; 2 great-grandchildren: Abel Harrington and Delilah Benham and his many cats, especially Tigger.

Always a jokester and knowledgeable about History, the Church, and anything else he could read about. He was a member of MENSA.

Bill was a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also is in the American Legion.

Bill loves people and parties. He was the 4th living member of his college buddies. Keep partying three friends!

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2023, at the Church of the Holy Spirit. The funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at the Church of the Holy Spirit. Private Burial.

I remember Bill very well from the time I worked my first job at City Hall, in the short-lived but extraordinary Policy Planning and Development office. He was one of a terrific team of young, dedicated professionals. His story-telling and pun-loving sense of humor stand out in my memory. Rest in peace, Bill.

Christine, John & I were sorry to hear of Deacon Bill´s passing. He and John go way back and I knew him thru the Diocese. We have been sick and unable to attend the funeral Mass but know our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

Christine and family,

I am sorry to hear of Bill´s passing. He was always a pleasure to work with when he was at Crye Leike. His business card was without a doubt the most memorable ever printed.
My prayers and thoughts are with you all.
