Janice Hamil Obituary

The world lost a little sparkle and a lot of laughter with the passing of Janice Ann Hamil on June 26th, 2025, a woman whose stories could make you laugh until you cried. She had a gift for turning even the most mundane moments into epic tales. Janice was the kind of person who could walk into a room and instantly make it warmer, funnier, and somehow more alive. Her laugh was contagious, her timing impeccable and her stories- got better every time she told them. She was a loyal and devoted friend to all and had a way of making everyone feel welcome, whether you were a lifelong friend or someone she just met. Janice was born August 29th, 1947, in Corpus Christi, TX to Gilbert "Buddy" Hershel Hamil and Janet Poimbeouf Hamil, graduated from St. Agness Academy and attended Lambuth University studying Psychology and Sociology. She leaves behind a legacy of joy and humor and a reminder that life is better with laughter.

Janice had an early career in retail in several beloved Memphis clothing stores such as, Frances Wright, Gus Mayer, Helen of Memphis, Sara Fredericks, and Mary Ellen's Couture. Later in life she worked in the insurance sales and investment business and worked as a bookkeeper for Crihfield Farm and Lake's Catfish. Her greatest passion was all things Germantown, and she was a member of the Germantown Chamber of Commerce for decades. She served on the Board of Directors as well as Chamber Ambassador and was also a member of the 2002 Class of Leadership Germantown and served on the Leadership Germantown Board for many years. From the inception of "Taste of the Town" and Chamber fashion shows, her leadership skills helped the Chamber maneuver economic highs and lows over her years of service. She was known for her willingness to help others and was always vocal in her support of a leader, an event, or a cause to support Germantown.

In keeping with her generous spirit, Janice donated her body to the Medical Education & Research Institute (MERI), continuing her legacy of helping others. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to MERI or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Janice was a loving Mother to Dee Goodwin (Marla) and Denise Fitzgerald (Andrew Billings); Grandmother to Wesley and Reagan Goodwin; Sister to Jill Lake (Earl) and the late Judy LaFico (Joe); Aunt to Aprii Liz O'Malley (Ryan), Joseph LaFico, Josh LaFico (Andrada); Great Aunt to Olivia and Grace O'Malley. A Celebration of Life service will be held at The Great Hall in Germantown on August 3rd, 2025, from 1:00-3:00 pm.

When we moved to Memphis as a young married couple Janice and her family adopted us and made us feel at home. She became a dear friend! We have stayed in touch over the years. Prayers to the rest of the family for peace knowing she isn´t in pain and she´s with her mom. Love, Susan Simmons
