John Harvey Viser III

1944 - 2024

John Harvey Viser, III passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2024. Born August 13, 1944, he was just shy of his 80th birthday.

Born and reared in Memphis, he was a true Southerner and loved hunting, fly fishing, telling stories, barbecue, and a good party. John never met a stranger and was a consummate host.

John graduated from Central High School and attended Mississippi State University. He spent his early years in the life insurance business and was active in Cotton Carnival. After retirement, he became a small residential contractor. During this time, John pursued his interest in rebuilding the migratory duck population and was instrumental in developing the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. In addition, he completed the program of Education for Ministry administered by the School of Theology, the University of the South. He was a member of Grace-St. Lukes Episcopal Church and is a former vestry member.

He is preceded in death by his parents Janice Coke Viser and John Harvey Viser, Jr. He leaves his wife, Barbara Brickels Viser, his daughter, Elizabeth Goodwin Viser, his son, John Harvey Viser, III (Alix), and his granddaughter, Sadie May Viser; also, his sister Clarice Viser Gary and brother Dr. William Coke Viser (Susan).

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Grace St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 1720 Peabody, at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
