Samuel Sciara Obituary

Samuel Joseph Sciara, Sr., 57 passed away unexpectedly at his home in Memphis, TN on Monday, March 13, 2023.

Sam was born on July 10, 1965, to Pete and Mary Sciara in Memphis, TN. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1983. Sam continued his studies under several world-renowned chefs across the United States after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY in 1986. He followed in Sciara legacy and joined the family restaurant business as a 3rd generation restaurateur. The family opened Sciara's Café Max and enjoyed great success.

He was a loving son, grandson, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend to many. Family was truly the most important part of his life. He often expressed his love for his family by indulging in his passion for cooking.

Sam was a very kind, sweet, and compassionate person. He was funny and could always make you laugh, sometimes at his own expense. His dog Honey was always at his side even for a short trip to the grocery store. Regardless of the holiday or get-together, you could always find him taking a nap in his comfy clothes. It was well-known how much Sam enjoyed the beach and the change of seasons, especially when it would snow.

He will be missed more than words can express.

Sam is survived by his daughter, Mary Sciara; sons, Sam Sciara, Jr. and Michael Sciara; grandson, Liam Sciara; sisters, Rose Montgomery (Alan) and Regina Cupp (Kevin); and brother, Carl Sciara (Kishea); nieces, nephews, extended family and his beloved dog Honey.

Sam was preceded in death by his son, Pete Sciara; parents, Pete and Mary Sciara; grandparents, Sam and Rose Sciara, and Carl and Marie Koppeis.

Visitation will commence on March 22, 2023, at 5 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 5668 Poplar Ave (901) 767-8930.

The funeral service will be held on March 23, 2023, at 10 am at the Church of the Holy Spirit. Father Michael Werkhoven will be officiating. Burial will follow.
