Charles Glazzard Obituary

Charles Donaldson Glazzard, MD, died peacefully at home on July 10, 2011 with loving family at his side. He was born April 10, 1928, in Cleveland, OH to Charles and Kathleen Glazzard and was raised in Lakewood, OH with his sister Jean Glazzard Cutts. Don received a scholarship as a trombonist to the University of Miami in Florida and later transferred to the University of Michigan as a premed student. He then attended and graduated from Wayne State University Medical School in Detroit, MI.
Upon completing medical school and his medical internship, Don joined the US Navy as a submarine and diving medical officer. Following the service, he engaged in a general medical practice until he began a psychiatry residency at Menninger's in Topeka, KS. After completing his residency, he worked as a civilian psychiatrist for the V.A. Hospital in Topeka and at the nearby Forbes AFB Hospital psychiatric facility. Don later moved to Olathe, KS where he engaged in private practice and was the medical director of the Kansas Psychiatric Institute. While in Olathe he became licensed as a private pilot and a certified flight instructor. In addition to his active duty in the US Navy, Don was in the USMCR while in college, and a Lt. Col. in the USAR during the Desert Storm War.
Don had four children, Charles, Eric, Kim and Teri through his first marriage to Margaret Fenton. After moving to Olathe, KS, Don met and married Margaret (Peggy) Leoni, adding her three children, Dan, Linda and Bill, to his loving family. Don and Peggy later moved to Springfield, MO where he became the medical director of the Marian Center psychiatric unit associated with St. John's Regional Health Center and then Chief of Psychiatry at the US Medical Center for Federal Prisoners. After retiring from the full-time practice of psychiatry, he and Peggy moved to Surprise, AZ where he continued to practice part time as a "Locum Tenens" psychiatrist.
Among his many other outstanding professional achievements and accolades, Don was board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry, Administrative Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry; President of the Kansas Psychiatric Association; and honored as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Don was a long time Rotarian, a proud member of the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) and was involved in many activities with the Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church in Sun City West, AZ. He was also active in the Bible Study Fellowship (Springfield, MO) and the Community Bible Study in Sun City West, AZ.
Don enjoyed traveling, flying, scuba diving, reading, music, golf, and was always learning. He loved his wife, his family, his practice of psychiatry, Arizona and his life! His family and friends loved him. In addition to his seven children, Don had 11 wonderful grandchildren: Erica, Chad, Laura, Adam, Chase, Blake, Sean, Joey, Megan, Paul and Danielle. Don was a compassionate, caring, and quiet man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He thanks God for his many blessings.
Please join us for Don's Memorial service to be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church located at 13658 Meeker Drive, Sun City West, AZ.

I was a partner that formed the Midwest Psychiatric Hospital in Olathe, Kansas that was sold and renamed The Kansas Psychiatric Insititue. I was a member of the Brandon Psychiatric Group that Don joined in about 1971. I left the group in 1973 after working with Don for two years. He was a gentleman, a gentle man and a compassionate physician. Patients who had Don as their psychiatrist were with an exceptional caregiver. I remember him taking me on my first ride in a small plane out of the Olathe airport and asking if I wanted to take over the controls for awhile. I was too scared and declined, but I sure enjoyed the experience.
