William Lloyd "Bill" Vas obituary

William Vas Obituary

April 25, 1941 - November 29, 2019 Son, Brother, Father, & Grandfather
Survived by Son Michael "Norman", Grandchildren Johnathon, Allie, & James
He was happiest with a fishing rod in his hand or at the controls of a boat.
Bill was a Life Long Beach Boy, in love with the ocean. In addition to fishing and boating, he enjoyed swimming, playing water polo, surfing both board and body, skin and scuba diving, and bicycling. He could often be seen riding his beach cruisers up and down the Newport Beach Boardwalk.
He retired from Long Beach Fire Department in 1995 after 33 years Serving as a Firefighter, Engineer, and Fire Boat Operator during the course of his career.
As a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Boat Captain for more than 50 years he ran dozens of Sportfishing, Charter, Tug boats, & Commercial Fishing vessels along with numerous private Yachts from Alaska to Costa Rica, through the Panama Canal, and across the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.
Bill loved the Southern California waters and spent much of his life boating and fishing along our coastline. Sharing his love of the ocean gave him great pleasure. He served as the President of the Balboa Angling Club and was a lifetime member there. He was active in the Pacific Fisheries Enhancement program, that breeds, raises, and releases thousands of White Sea Bass in our local waters and was the volunteer coordinator for the grow out facility and pens in Newport Harbor for several years. For decades he was a volunteer deck hand on board the annual introduction to fishing charter trips hosted by the Balboa Angling Club for underprivileged kids and took great pride in sharing his knowledge and experience with the children he encountered on those trips and his travels.
I love and miss you dad, and I'm sorry that Matt isn't able to pay his respects as well.
Rest in peace
