Benjamin Rountree Obituary

Benjamin Asa Rountree, 83, of Athens passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, at TerraBella of Athens. He was a native of Johnson County, Fla., a resident of McMinn County for most of his life, a son of the late Emra Thomas "Stump" and Gladys Ditmore Rountree and was preceded in death by daughter, Terra Rountree; two sisters, Betty Jean Rountree and Gladys Irene Russell; and brother, Earnest Thomas "Tommy" Rountree. He retired from Bowater Paper as a millwright and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Rob Long of Englewood, and Shannon and David Self of Englewood; sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Harold Smith of Athens; two grandchildren, Rachal Self of Englewood, and Joseph and Mandy Self of Pass Christian, Miss.; three great-grandchildren, Asa Sorrows, Peyton Self, and Tatum Self; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home. Interment will follow in McMahan Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be family and friends. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the McMinn Regional Humane Society or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
