Acree LINK Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Dr. Acree Shreve Link Sr., 85, died on June 15, 2010.
He was born March 20, 1925, and was raised in Danville, Va.
Dr. Link attended George Washington High School in Danville and was drafted out of high school to serve in World War II between 1943-1946. He served as a sergeant in the 3rd Army with General George S. Patten during the Battle of the Bulge, then served with the 101st Airborne division until the end of the war. He graduated from George Washington High School after the war.
Dr. Link attended Virginia Tech for one year and then transferred to the University of Richmond, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. While at the University of Richmond he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Beta Beta Beta Society in Biology. He also held numerous leadership positions at the university.
Dr. Link graduated first in his class from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. He was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and Psi Omega Fraternity. He practiced dentistry in Newport News for 50 years before retiring. Some of that time he practiced with his son and son-in-law. He also served as the dentist for the Newport News Shipyard from 1955 to 1972.
Dr. Link was a part of many organizations during his life including: serving on the staff at Riverside and Mary Immaculate Hospitals for 10 years, serving on a Board at Mary Immaculate Hospital for 10 years, being a charter member of the Newport News Kiwanis Club and a long-standing and charter member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He was a member of and achieved lifetime membership status in 2004 in the Peninsula Dental Society, the Virginia Dental Association and the American Dental Association.
An avid golfer, he enjoyed many rounds at the James River Country Club and won the Senior club championship in 1993.
Dr. Link was preceded in death by his parents, Lilly and Oscar Link; five brothers, Thornton, Eugene, Garnett, Nelson and Thomas; and one sister, Myrtle.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara DeHardit Link; daughter, Terry Link Jacobs and husband, George; sons, Acree "Buddy" Shreve Link Jr. and Dr. Michael Joseph Link and wife, Melissa; four grandchildren, Allan, Alyson, Joey and Megan; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 18, 2010, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection will begin at 2 p.m. at the church celebrated by the Rev. Kenneth E. Wood.
The family wishes to express their immense gratitude to the entire round-the-clock nurses and Riverside Hospice who gave care to Acree.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, 52 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, VA 23601.

The first member i met when i joined the James River Country Club was Dr. Link.I Liked him right away as he made me feel so welcome.I had the privilege of playing golf with Dr. Link on several occasions and I found him to be a fine player, a genuine sportsman, and a true gentleman.I considered him the consummate family man.I know he will be missed by all who truly knew him.
