Bennie McCall Obituary

HAMPTON - On the afternoon of July 19, 2008, God's finger touched Bennie Earl McCall and she slept.
She was born on Nov. 23, 1919, to the late James Henderson Staton and Mozell Johnson Staton in Tarboro, N.C., where she spent her formative years. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Tarboro until her family moved to Norfolk, Va., in 1930. In Norfolk, she united with the Metropolitan A. M. E. Zion Church and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in June 1938.
She met Morris Otis McCall while he was stationed at the Norfolk Naval Base. They were married on June 22, 1942. Upon his separation from the service, the couple settled in Phoebus, Va. A short while later, the family relocated to Newsome Park in Newport News. It was there that they raised their six children. The family initially resided in the community of Newsome Park on 41st Street. When the housing was demolished and replaced with updated homes around 1998, the family moved to a Marshall Avenue address in Newsome Park. In 1999, Mr. and Mrs. McCall moved to their current home off Queen Street in Hampton.
Mrs. McCall was very active with the activities at Newsome Park Elementary School and G.W. Carver High School and was an active member of both PTAs while her children were in attendance. Mrs. McCall was also a very active member of Walters Temple A.M.E. Zion Church when it was located on 23rd Street in Newport News. At the time of her death, her membership at Greater Walters Temple A.M.E. Zion Church exceeded 45 years where she taught Sunday school, played the piano and organ, sang in the Senior Choir, organized and directed the Buds of Promise Choir, organized the Youth Adult Missionary Society (YAMS). Sis. Bennie, as she was fondly known by church members, enjoyed attending church conferences and conventions or any type of meeting where she could learn more about the organization of the church. To that end, she was president of Greater Walters Lay Council, president of Church Women United for two years, and secretary for the District Lay Council. She also travelled to Jerusalem with Church Women United.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Morris Otis McCall, and her son, neQiniso Abdullah (nee Walter McCall).
She leaves to cherish her memory her five children, Dr. Maurice Henderson McCall (Ernestine) of Pontiac, Mich., F. Ellen McCall Bartley (Spencer) of Mansfield, Texas, Mozell Yvonne McCall Davis (Burton) of Harrisburg, N.C., Eileen R. F. McCall, Esq., of Mitchellville, Md., Dr. Alvin Clinton McCall (Anna) of St. Louis, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Muminah Abdullah of Austin, Texas; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-nieces; goddaughter, Brenda Miller Kirk; devoted life-long friends, Alice Booker and Olivia Miller; cousins, dear friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today at Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church, 656 28th St., Newport News. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Brothers and Sisters,

It is Mother's Day and the message at church was, "I love my mother because....” There are so many responses I have but the most important one is that she led me to Christ Jesus and showed me how to live a Christian life. I am not sad remembering her today. I just miss her and miss not being able to tell her that I love her.

I love you all.

Our mother was born 90 years ago today. Spencer and I went to church this morning and to the Thanksgiving Testimonial Dinner this evening. I was tooooooooooo emotional to get up and give thanks for our Mom. Maybe I will do better next year.

My dear McCall Family,

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all upon the recent passing of your dear mother. She was such a special person, as was your dear late father; and she knew well the kind of love and nurturing required to raise intelligent, capable children/people. What a blessing to have had such a parent - such parents. May you follow in their footsteps and have the grace and wisdom to move on to the "next" level. Peace be with you always.

Sincerely,
Sharon Coles-Stewart & Family

To the McCall Family,

I was sorry to hear of the passing of your Mother. My mother (Inez Yates Sanford) and yours were very dear friends and with Alvin and I being the same age and in music together, she was very dear to me as well.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

These are the observations of a little girl: Alvin I remember in school as quiet, smart, funny, talented, well-rounded, musical. Even in my youth I recognized that as the sign of family love.

Dear McCall Family--I am sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. She was beautiful, as are you all. And you know you shall see her again.

In love, your neighbor, friend, classmate, Connie Berhe` (Mathis).

To the McCall Family - Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can not heal! Your loved one has gone on to reap the rewards she so graciously earned. I've always admired your mother because she was not only a beautiful woman but had a caring spirit and a kind word for all that she met! I remember your family from Newsome Park and Carver and I know that you've been truly blessed. My family and I will keep you in our prayers during this trying time.

Such a wonderful, wonderful lady - my 1st Sunday school teacher. She tought me my 1st Bible verse. She directed me in the Buds Chior and encouraged me no matter how awful I sounded. She showed me so much love and special attention, which really made a difference in my life. I'm so thankful to have known her.
My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. May God bless you and give you peace and comfort.

To Bro. Alvin & Family:

My sincerest sympathy and prayers to you and your family during this time. While I know you will dearly miss your mother, rejoice in knowing that she is in her place of honor in heaven. Celebrate her life instead of mourning her death, and keep the joyful memories of her in your heart.

I pray that the family will remain strong and unified for years to come.

Peace and blessings to you all.

To the family of Mrs. McCall. Words cannot express the feeling that our family has for this wonderful lady. She was my first choir director and a wonderful mentor (even before mentoring was popular). Heaven is brighter because she is there. We will all miss her but not what she planted in us as children.
