Bennie MOSS Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Bennie Hugh Moss passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, 2010, at home with his wife of 58 years, Maxine Harris Moss, by his side. He had fought a courageous battle with diabetes for some time and had also suffered three benign brain tumor surgeries and a stroke, but was strong to the very end.
He was born in Oxford, N.C. on Oct. 1, 1929, the youngest son of Ollie and Tazzie Lee Moss.
He went into the army in March 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict in Germany along the Czech border. He married his longtime sweetheart while on leave in July 1952 and returned to Germany until 1953.
He came home to Williamsburg, Va., and went to work for the Williamsburg Laundry. He later worked as a construction foreman and helped build many structures in Williamsburg, including the Williamsburg Hospitality House, James Blair School and the old Carmike Theatre. He also worked at the Newport News Shipyard and tied steel and poured concrete for Kellogg, Brown and Root. Even after retirement and his bout with brain tumors, he worked as a security guard with the Williamsburg Pottery.
Mr. Moss enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved to sing and play guitar. He was a member of a gospel choir in North Carolina, as a young man, and was a marvelous tenor. They performed on local radio and made several old 78 records. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed telling them tales about the old days.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine; four children, Benita Jones and her husband, Robert, Adrian Moss, Anthony Moss and his wife, Ailyne of South Carolina, Michelle Williams and her husband, Ken; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one on the way. He also leaves a brother, Theodore Moss; and was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Moss and his parents, all of North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice Community Care in Newport News, Va., whose team was loving and devoted in Mr. Moss's last few months and whose service to the family will be remembered fondly always.

Maxine,
So sorry to hear of the death of Bennie. I remember him fondly from my childhood days. My parents were friends of your family the Harris's for as long as I can remember. Bennie was quite a character, fun loving, funny.
