Bernice Perkins Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Bernice P. Perkins was called to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, March 1, 2017. Her life's journey began on April 5, 1931, the daughter of the late Sadie M. and Willie B. Perry, Sr., of Mississippi. Mrs. Perkins pursued a Master's Degree in Nutrition. She retired as a supervisor of the Nutrition Department at the Veterans Administration, after forty years of dedicated service. Upon moving to Williamsburg, she joined hands in fellowship with New Zion Baptist Church. She was a faithful servant of God and was a devoted member of the Senior Choir, Director of the Health Ministry and a volunteer for the Adult Day-Care. Her favorite pastime was playing golf. Her positive input regarding health and dietary issues will be greatly missed by everyone. She leaves to cherish her blessed memories, her husband, James Perkins; her sister, Marilyn Watson; her brother, Willie B. Perry, Jr.; her niece; eight nephews; other loving relatives and a host of caring friends. A service of remembrance will be held 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 9, 2017, in New Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Robert A. Whitehead officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the church by 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Professional services entrusted to the staff of Whiting's Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg. 757-229-3011. whitingsfuneralhome.com

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Bernice Perkins. I had the pleasure of rooming with her in Boston last year at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Food and Nutrition Conference & Expo, 2016. In 2015, in Nashville, I had the honor of presenting her with the NOBIDAN (National Organization of Blacks in Dietetics and Nutrition) 50 Year Recognition Award. Prior to that we served on the House of Delegates at the same time. We shared many conversations about the importance of promoting healthy eating within the African American community. She always took time out to acknowledge me, sharing her wisdom and encouragement. I will always remember her beautiful smile. R.I.H. Bernice!

Deepest sympathies to the Perkins family. Ms. Perkins was a incredible woman and Dietitian. I had the pleasure of meeting her and hearing her speak. She had so much knowledge in the field of nutrition and dietetics. She will truly be missed and I thank God to have the chance to meet her and talk to her.
