I was thinking about Bob and Lawana, decided to do a search, and found this announcement. I rented a room from Bob and Lawana for a couple of months when I worked at Busch Gardens as a performer back in 1990. They were a lovely couple and treated me like family. I was truly blessed to live in their home for those few months. I'm sad I didn't get a chance to see him one more time.

When I first met pastor Atkins, for some reason I still don't understand, I was a bit afraid of him. But through the years, as I got to know him a little better (I never had the privilege of knowing him very well), I realized that not only was he quite so scary after all, but thatm in fact, he was very nice. We both had a burden for racial reconciliation, and realized that if we were going to strive to repair the damage done to relationships between out Caucasian and African-American brethren, we needed to get our own situation straight. After all, if two people of the same colour couldn't get along, how could they minister to folks of other colours? So we sat down and had a long talk over the phone and ironed things out. And I thank God we did. My only regret is that it didn't happen sooner. My condolences to Mrs. Atkins and his children. Take comfort in all the lives he touched, and the people whom he helped make into blessings wherever they go to this very day. I can think of several right now, but I won't embarrass them by naming them.
Pastor Atkins, you are greatly missed.

I have fond memories of Bob from being students together at Holmes. We had classes together and got go know each other.

It has been a privilege & honor to work together with Bob over the past 21 years. Together we helped form the local association of Pastors in our city for the explicit purpose of creating more unity and cooperation between local churches. With his kind spirit and endearing manner, he won the hearts of many to join in the burden to pray the foregoing into existence...a work not yet completed. We will miss his gentle kindness and ability to push others into higher places in Christ. What a tremendous Christian & brother...that is the highest complement that can be given to a person who has dedicated their whole life to serve the purposes of God in their generation! Our heart reaches out to his beloved wife and extended family in this time of their loss. You know what...?? HEAVEN WINS!

I had been out of touch with Bob over the last few years, but I cherish the time that he was my pastor and friend. He is probably the most humble and gracious man that I have ever met. It is hard to lose such a wonderful human but he is with his savior now and that gives me great comfort!
