Dear Brian, Missy and Kathy,
I have only just heard the news about Dale, and yet I haven't been able to stop hurting these past few days. I know that the tide of emotion I am feeling is caused by the fact that I have NEVER known such a tight knit family, and to imagine the Roe family without Dale is to imagine a house without a foundation. I know how much he meant to you all. He was truly a special man. For five years, in fact, he treated me with all the warmth and generosity that a father would show a daughter, and I will forever be grateful. Kathy, you and Dale were the best examples of wonderful parents. I only hope I can put to good use all the wonderful lessons you both taught me about the power of unconditional love.
All my love,
Kati

Dear Roe Family-
20 years ago, Coach Roe was my SCA adviser at Denbigh High and I still recall what a kind, supportive, amazing person he was. He encouraged and challenged us to be the best people we could be and I feel like I am a better person for having had him in my life. I am so saddened to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with all of you, he will be missed.

When I remember high school the first person I think about is Coach Roe. He did a lot for everyone, not only with SCA and athletics, but with life and morality. I came to Coach with all my problems whether he liked it or not and he always helped. I have a lot of hilarious SCA memories to keep with me always. I will keep you all in my prayers. God Bless.

I heard of Coach Roe's passing from Al Dorner while at the AAA State Indoor Track Championships this past weekend. Coach Roe and his family lived across the street from me on Arnett Drive. Along with Matt Boone, Jim Hall, David Cutler, and Al Dorner, I considered Coach Roe a gifted role model as a teacher and a coach. He had a quiet influence on my development as a teacher and a coach. When he became the Athletic Director at Denbigh, I knew the "program" was in good hands.
Please accept my deepest sympathy in your loss.

Coach Roe was an amazing teacher and coach. Coach Roe made class and playing sports fun. He was always there at all the games to cheer us on. It was always nice to look over and see him on the sideline! He always let me get away with things in his class. I am very sorry to hear about the devasting news. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Roe was more than my softball coach, he was my friend. He mentored me from the time I was 10 years old and never let me stop trying. I was shocked at the news that such an icon is gone - though he will NEVER be forgotten. May God provide peace through this tough time.

Dear Ms. Cathy,
The Coach was never to busy to say hello.
He treated everyone with respect, just like you do. May Jehovah God be with you and your family. I did not realize that the Coach was your Sweetie.

It has been a long time since Arnett Drive and Poquoson Middle School. Fortunately, I was able to keep up with the family by having two of my children play for Gloucester High's basketball team. Every time we played Denbigh, we'd make sure we chatted a few minutes after the game. Two things are certain....he loved his family and was very, very proud of them and he loved teaching kids. He leaves an awesome legacy.

Dear Roe family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Coach Roe was one fine coach, teacher, and all around person at Denbigh High School. Whenever there was a question or a problem I had, he was always the person who had the answer. Everyone on the baseball field had extreme respect for him as a coach and an individual. He played a huge role in all of our lives and he will never be forgotten.

I really don't know where to begin, except I miss Dale already! We talked at least 3 times a day, me asking questions, and him answering. He was the guy that knew everything and always there to help. Just know that God will get you thru the bad times. I am sure Dale is watching over each of you, especially those beautiful granddaughters. My prayers are with you!

I worked with Mr. Roe as an SCA officer at Denbigh High School from 1992-1994. He was the most no-nonsense, omniscient (in DHS, at least), helpful, encouraging, inspiring teacher for me there. He had the largest number of keys on his key ring than I'm sure even the school administrators and maintenance workers did. He knew everything, got everything done, helped everyone, and all with a smile. Yet, he had the most wonderful biting wit. I have missed Mr. Roe all these years and am sorry now I can't come back to visit him. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family, and hope they all know what a wonderful man he was.

From our family to yours, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Coach Roe hired me as an assistant coach for the JV boys soccer team and a coach for the girls varsity soccer team, in 99 and 2000. He looked out for our kids at Denbigh, and was well liked and respected. He gave me the opportunity to give back to the school and the community, doing what I loved, working with the kids. He was always very supportive. Two of my girls were elected to the SCA their senior year, but unfortunately they never got the chance to work with coach, due to us relocating to Texas. But I am thankful for the time that we got to know him, and for the time I got to work with him. He gave so much to the school, kids and the community. He will truly be missed, but also will always br remembered.

Wow i only knew coach roe for about a year and a half but he was sooooo awesome. It really saddens me to know that he is really gone i used to go and visit him on a daily basis just to say hi or just to talk to him about anything......even if it was somewhat "stupid" he listened anyway. Im really upset tha he has left this precious earth but god needed him more than we did, and unfortunately we cant bring him back. My heart goes out for his wife and other family and friends as well as his denbigh family and friends. He will truly be missed by a lot of people and hope to see you again one day coach roe.

Hello Cathy, Missy, Brian, Eugene,
In the days ahead, please remember the good times. Our Dale leaves a lifetime of memories for all of us to share.
Always remember that God will make a way for all of us.
I always will remember the days I spent with Dale at Denbigh. For 11 years, we talked, laughed, and yes, sometimes we shared a few tears.
Hang in there,

Dear Mrs. Roe and Family
I was one of the many SCA kids at DHS. We all loved Mr. Roe and are deeply saddened. He taught us all the value of being honest and down to earth. He also taught us all the phrase 'tinker's darn.' One thing we knew for sure, he gave a 'tinker's darn' about all of his students.
My deepest sympathy to you.

Dear the Roe Family,
My family has known Dale Roe since he began his career at Denbigh in 1969. All four siblings attended Denbigh from 1969-1985 as well as my husband as well as his three other siblings. All of us have had the distinct honor of either having him as a teacher, coach, Athletic Director or mentor. He possessed a unique passion not only for life but for his profession that came through in his daily interactions with students, staff and parents. My thoughts and prayers will continually be with you now and the months to come.

Mrs. Roe and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I was affiliated with DHS athlectics from 1998-2005, then I moved to Gloucester. Mostly as the wrestling team mom & helping run tournaments, but helped Dale with banquets and whatever else the other coaches needed, even after I moved. He was an amazing person and friend. He presented me with a plaque at the spring 05 athletic banquet. As he was giving it to me he had tears in his eyes and too many kind words. I knew he would always be my friend. Anytime I travel down to the big city I always stop to see him. What will I do now? My friend is gone, I will miss him terribly. You are in my prayers, God Bless you.

Dear Roe Family,
I am one of many that was deeply inspired by Mr. Roe. Mr. Roe was our SCA Advisor when I was SCA President in 88/89. It brings a smile to my face remembering Mr. Roe and his can do attitude. Coach Roe was a wonderful, caring, respected man. He was not only a wonderful Coach but a great friend, and teacher. The best parts of the day were going in to Coach Roe's office and just hanging out in between classes, during classes, and lunch. I was an athlete at Denbigh High School and had the priveledge of knowing him not only as a student but having him guide me through his roles as an Athletic Director for Denbigh High School. It was absolutely devastating to hear the news that he had passed. His legacy will for ever live on throughout the halls of Denbigh High School and throughout the Newport News community. My heart goes out to the Roe Family.

To Mrs. Roe, Missy, and Brian,
I feel like I have lost a member of my own family. I spent more time with Mr. Roe in my high school days than I did with my own family! He was so committed to helping me to become a better softball player and person as well. He was a wonderful example of hard work and dedication. All those hours on the pitching mound amount to lots of wonderful memories that I will always treasure. I will keep you all in my prayers.

I had the priveledge and honor of playing four years of softball for Coach Roe and then later working with him as an adult. Between SCA and softball, there is hardly a high school memory that I have that he is not somehow a part of. As a new teacher and coach, he was always someone to lean on and offered advice that I still cherish today as an administrator.
I can still laugh for hours thinking of the things that happened on that softball field and I know that he would be happy knowing that he can still make us all laugh. He was always the best at everything he did - from DPPK Pre-School picker-upper for Jordan, to mentor, to coach, to AD - and I will truly miss him. He will always have a special place in my heart!

I was very saddened to hear of Mr. Roe's passing. Mr. Roe coached my JV baseball team in 1970 when I was a freshman at Denbigh High School. Mr. Roe had never coached before this year, yet, we won the JV Peninsula District baseball title that year. While Mr. Roe did not seem to know alot about baseball that first year, he ceratinly knew how to lead and mentor. He was a man of integrity, character and decency who served as a great role model for our team. As I look back now many years later, Mr. Roe definitely made a positive impact on my life. In the end, this is far more important than anything he could have taught me about baseball. It is my hope that I see Mr. Roe one day in heaven as I know without question that is where he has gone. It is my prayer that God blesses and comforts the family in the coming days and months in the loss of Mr. Roe.
