Daniel Brunk Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Daniel Wenger Brunk was born on June 11, 1920, in Fentress, Va., and went peacefully home to be with his maker on Monday morning, Sept. 4, 2006. He moved to the Newport News area as a young man and spent the rest of his life as an active part of the Mennonite Colony in Denbigh. In 1941 he married Dora May Hertzler. As a young couple, they started a small business selling chickens at the farmer's market in Newport News, hauling fresh chickens from the Shenandoah Valley and plucking and butchering them on Friday night. Saturdays were spent at market, selling chickens while their first baby slept in a laundry basket at their feet. Dan learned the trade of plumbing by apprenticing to a local plumber, but in the early 1950's he struck out on his own and opened his own shop: Dan Brunk, Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning. As the business grew, his green and white trucks could be spotted all over the community. He was respected as a direct, fair, and honest businessman. Eventually the business was bought by his nephew and renamed Brunk Mechanical. In the 1960's Dan, in collaboration with Nice Brother's Construction, helped develop sections of a rapidly growing city, putting his considerable energy, stamina, and skill into the creation of one of the earliest subdivisions in the area, Eastwood; and other projects such as Beechmont, Nicewood, Chelsea, and New Hampton Commons. Dan's mechanical skills were legendary. He could fix or make almost anything, and often did. Friends, family and neighbors all benefited from his talent, which he shared freely and generously, dropping everything to fix someone's furnace or repair someone else's broken door lock. He loved a challenge and loved creating a solution for a problem. When Dora, as she aged, grew too short for the pews at church, Dan built a little footstool that could be kept beneath her customary seat and pulled out on Sunday morning. He also gave generously and tirelessly of his time and money to the many organizations he supported, such as Wycliffe Bible Translators, Mennonite Central Committee, and Tech Serve, to name a few. As an active volunteer in Tech Serve, he helped develop water purification systems and plumbing systems for hospitals, schools and orphanages in India and South America. An adventurer with a great curiosity for the unknown, Dan loved to travel. Besides his trips for Tech Serve and his many trips with Dora, he also sailed the Caribbean, motorcycled in the Andes, and as recently as the fall of 2005, at the age of 85, explored Africa with his son Ken. Dan was a great storyteller and had a mischievous sense of humor. As an old man, he was distinctive, sporting a thick beard and mustache and always wearing a Greek fisherman's hat. He whistled as he worked and carried a harmonica with him at all times. As his body began to fail him, more and more he gravitated toward the old hymns about heaven. As his death neared, he asked to be buried in a simple pine box with these words on top: 'Gone Home.' He is survived by his wife, Dora, with whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage last November 30; and five children, Shirley Coberly of Syringa, Va., (husband Joe), Ronald Brunk of Charlottesville, Va., (wife Karen), Kathryn Stoltzfus of Leola, Pa., (husband Dale), Kenneth Brunk of Harrisonburg, Va., (wife Gail), and Juanita Brunk of Brooklyn, N.Y. He is also survived by one brother, Sam Brunk of Newport News; one sister, Edith Molly Barnes of Telford, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Viewing will be held at Warwick River Mennonite Church on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service in the sanctuary at 1 p.m., with burial following in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Habitat for Humanity, 809 Main Street, Newport News, VA 23601. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.

Dear Dora and family,

Although I only knew Dan personally for a short time many years ago, I loved him very much and he has been a great influence in my adult life. Many times, facing at a formidable situation, I have asked myself, “Now how would Dan Brunk approach this problem?” That always helped me level my thinking and look at it one step at a time until the problem was solved. Dan was truly one of the great ones – and a one-of-a-kind great one at that. My thoughts and prayers and love are with you and yours.

I was viewing the obituaries searching for my brother's wife's name when I came across the one for Daniel Wenger Brunk. As I read his obituary, I couldn't help but think my mother very possibly knew of him. She was Lucille Morris Leasa. She passed away last November. I remember hearing the name Brunk on many occasions. So, if their paths have crossed, I'm sure she would be delighted in knowing that I am signing this book. A smile came across my face when I read the part that Daniel made a stool for his wife because she was getting shorter. I, too, am having the same problem and a person at church just yesterday agreed to make me a stool. God always provides for our needs. My prayers are with you. Although it is never easy to say good bye, there is comfort in knowing we shall once again be re-united and oh what a wonderful gathering that will be.

Dear Dora and Family,

I was saddened to see Dan's obituary in yesterday's "Daily News Record". I will never forget the times that I spent with Kathy, at your home years ago, and how welcomed I always felt. Your family has been in my daily prayers and will continue to be, in the days ahead. I am sure there are wonderful, precious memories in all the years you shared, together. May God's grace and peace be with you as you are lifted up before the Lord for strength for each day.

With love,

I didn't know Mr. Brunk personally. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, however, I feel like I've known him for a long time, through conversations with my sister, Jackie. I share in the love she feels and conveyed to me through the months prior to his death. I did get to meet Dora, a very special lady, I have enjoyed reading her journel and feel like I've known the family for years. My prayers and deepest sympathy are with you all..Being the special man, Mr. Brunk was, he will be missed greatly...My thoughts and prayers go with you through the coming days.

I have many fond memories of Uncle Dan, especially at family reunions as I was growing up. I pray for God's Grace and comfort for Aunt Dora and their family. May Uncle Dan and all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Jesus I trust in You.

I must cocede that I did not know Uncle Dan that well, but have always enjoyed his incisive remarks at family reunions.

And it is notable that on his demise I learned with pleasure that his middle name is Wenger.

At my Jewish neighbor's funeral the Rabbi said "The measure of a man cannot be taken until his death. The book of his life can only be written when his life is done." I am sure Uncle Dan's book

is a good one.

May God bless the Brunk family in this period of reflection and "cause his shining face to smile upon you."

Having known Dan Brunk for over 50 years, it is hard to sum up what to say in a few words, how I feel about his life & death! However I think that is what he would want. I can literally hear him now; "If you are going to say something, say it, or sit down & be quiet."

Let it suffice for me to say that I enjoyed being around him, & that we were of a kindred spirit!!
